Looking at buying an '05 Yukon XL
 

Well, well..... I have spent a few years on the '88 - '98 board, owning a 1988 GMC Sierra SLE. Reg cab).... I have about 392,000 miles on it..... And it's in pretty darn good shape ( less new paint).....

But, it looks like carrying passengers and still having a large storage & a tad newer comfort level......

I stumbled on a 2005 Yukon XL 4x4 SLT. Graphite color.

1st off, to make a description of it short..... It is CLEAN.. inside / out. VERY clean!! CarFax shows oil changes every 3,000 miles. Maintenance has been kept up. ( brakes, changing tranny fluids, A/C, etc.).. Even the headlights look new. Most of the maintenance was at a local Cadillac dealer ( west Florida)....Also Michelin tires ( so the last owner respected the truck)..

Very clean underneath.... no rust.... spare tire never used ( Bridgestone )

A high option GMC.... Leather, buckets, trim. No sun roof. Not a 'ding' on the exterior paint, and paint is very good.

140,000 miles ZERO defects in interior.

So, my question..... any issues to worry about?

Even though I have owned my '88 for ever, maintenance has been more fun, rather, than too expensive.... considering....

No comments? I hear some year models have issues after 100,000 miles...

I wanted to get some thoughts from you '99-'06 guys.....& gals. :c2:

Buy it I'm sure this would make a nice truck for you.I see a lot of 99-06 trucks/suvs come into dealership I work at with 2-300,000 plus.This looks like a very well maintained vehicle. I bought a 98 gmc suburban in 04 with 100,000 on it and sold it in 2015 with 250,000 still going strong.

I will be selling my '88 C2500 & an Infiniti I30 to get it... ( I don't need 4 vehicles in the driveway).... We just bought a new Infiniti..

I have invested a lot into the '88 Sierra ... Old Infiniti is STILL like new.

'04 yukon xl here. Spent its life in Michigan so its showing its age. I had a lot of eratic electrical issues, no starts its completly dead, lights and radio dont turn off. Gauges stop working and are incorrect alot. 272K miles on original engine, it has been supercharged for 120K of that, uses oil and a bit noisy but still strong. Im on my 3rd transmission, its a known weakness. Check the suspension codes, the z55 and zw7 options are more expensive to replace. Ive replaced wheel bearing twice, a set of control arms and bushings, our roads suck big time here.

Overall its been a pretty good vehicle. I love the room with the 3rd seat removed, only bad thing is the poor mileage but it does run on e85 which is great for the supercharger.

Sounds like you found a nice truck, should treat you well for a long time.

Cdub..... The one consideration I have is parts/repair costs...
My '88 is pretty low cost.
I am taking the 2005 for a long test drive this weekend ( maybe).... But looking at the CarFax, it shows 3 pages of well-timed - mileage service records. I can only guess any issues may have been resolved. ( good for me).....

Heck... even the leather has no wear / cracking.

It has 16" wheels.... I may swap from my old truck, my BRAND NEW Michelin tires for the 1/2 worn Michelins on the Yukon.... But my new tires are more "comfort tires" with the 2 ply sidewalls... I wonder if the added weight of the Yukon requires me to get a harder tire?? ( But, I'll save $800.00 )

It looks real clean, its rare to see the drivers seat with no cracks or tears. Good luck with the test drive. One last thought, I replaced the yukon xl with a '16 sierra 1500. The yukon xl was hands down a much better tow vehicle. The awd was awesome in the snow and rain, not that snow is much of a factor for you.

Well, I test drove the '05 Yukon for a half hour today.....
I found 2 issues.....

1).... The manual tilt steering. It slips out of it's position in the medium settings. The steering wheel is solid in the completely "up" and completely "down".... But with a bit of pressure, the wheel falls down in middle positions.
( Not good )
WHAT DOES IT TAKE TO REPAIR THAT????? Anyone?

2).... As I come to a stop from 30mph, slowly to stopping.... It sounds / feels like a front brake pad is grinding the rotor as you stop. But no real warping feel. Stops straight.

As my '88 C2500 is not to expensive to replace a front rotor / pad, is it a reasonable cost for this 2005 Yukon??

Everything else seems great with the Yukon 4x4.

The brakes are cheap and simple to do yourself. I have never dealt with a loose tilt column. Must be some sort of gear or stop is broken, maybe the old owners would pull themselves up in to cab and broke it. use it for negotiation leverage and have them fix it if you like the truck.

Yup.... not worried about brakes.. ( If.. "Big if " )..... I buy the beast, I would check & refresh the brakes anyway.

Tomorrow I will inquire at the GMC stealer about the column problem.

I'm surprised a member, here, doen't seem to share any column issues...
Maybe it is not a common problem?

loose steering wheel adjustment is due to a worn out "lever-lock - spring".

The spring holds the adjuster lever, back into place, to lock in, the release.

$10 spring

1 1/2 labor to replace. Not bad, all things considering.

If all things go well, the Yukon will be mine tomorrow... ( Monday).....

You guys will be seeing me hanging around here after that!

I'll be shopping for a full length liner... is Weathertech the best for the $$...for the rear, with the 3rd row seat removed.
( probably a new thread....)....:mm:
