What its worth? 1985 GMC Suburban

Well looking for something to drive this winter and came across this. Its rusty but seems like the drivetrain is solid. It would need inner rockers, rear 1/4's and rear inner wheelhouses to be perfect.

Is it worth 3k? Seems a bit high for a rust problem. I haven't heard it run but the guy says it runs perfect. Interior is clean and its loaded with A/C, no word on if it works yet.

Around here you would be looking at 500-1000. I bought a group deal a while back , four suburbans, all reasonable mileage. 1 3/4 ton , 3 1/2 tons for 800.

I think its fairly high.

I just saw the fact that it was a 6.2 that helps but not 3000 worth of help.

3k is a bit much i think, maybe 2500 max if everything mechanical is perfect still the add says.

People are super cheap here. Its crazy, nobody gives anything away, and those same people want something for nothing. I'm selling a set of mud tires with good tread right now, and I've gotten 8 emails from people offering 50% of my asking price, I'm not even asking much. My ads must seem desperate or something.

Double your asking price and see what happens! It might be interesting. I tried to give away a perfectly good lawn mower lots called no one wanted it. I waited two weeks posted it for 200.00 and the first guy who called bought it for 100.00. Being too cheap may hurt you.
Still think the burb is way high, by about 1200.00 or so.

Seems kind of high. I sold my 88 3/4 ton 350/400 w/86K on it for $2K las year. It had similar rust issues in the rear, but the rest was clean, ex fire truck.

I am just worried about something expensive breaking with the diesel engine, never had one before.

I'm just looking for something more fuel efficient than the Jeep for winter, funny I come to this thing , but I do hear the 6.2 gets 20+ mpg. Any truth to this? My Jeep gets 15 on a good day, and it's got a problem everyday.

Maybe I'll just drive my C10 this winter, tho I wanted a 4WD

I wouldnt pay 3k for that with not a spec of rust on it. 1-2k all day long where im at, with no rust.

Re: What its worth? 1985 GMC Suburban

Its different here, these trucks disintegrate with the salty roads. Not many clean ones left. I got lucky with my C10.

Re: What its worth? 1985 GMC Suburban

The 6.2 gets pretty good mileage but please don't pay 3k for it. I mean, do what you want but I think I would fly into a rust free state, get one for cheap, and have a road trip back home. That would make for a good story later on.

I have a burb of the same year and specs and I'll tell ya I don't get 20mpg. I get over 16.5mpg on a good day. As for the price I bought mine rust free, with less miles, and two new tires for $2350. The interior in mine was perfect and the only flaws was peeling paint, and that the two older tires were cracking but good tread. Only issues I've had was heater core went out, breaks needed new shoes, and the thermostat seal had to be replaced. Besides that just some routine maintance and a few car washes and she runs great.

So maybe I got a steal or maybe I paid right on the money. Either way just check everything on yours, if it's got that much rust I honestly wouldn't pay more than 1500. Rust is a bad deal and I hate having to f*** with it.

Yes do they break but some of the things that cause them to break are a defective harmonic balancer, bad glow plugs, bad oil cooler lines or installation of a turbocharger.

The harmonic balancer on these engines should be replaced every few years or install a Fluidamper and be done with it.

I get high upper 20's with my 82 6.2L diesel Suburban but it's 2 wheel drive, 1/2 ton, 3.08 axles and has O/D. I also keep my speed down to 55 mph.

I'd maybe pay up to $2200 but no more.

1985 Chevrolet K20 Suburban 4x4 6.2L Detroit/TH400/208

Unfortunately, those things I highlighted in bold are a big limitation to fuel economy numbers.

Re: What its worth? 1985 GMC Suburban

Even if everything mechanically is 100% perfect, that is today it could ( and will)change any time. I would not be excited about pouring my hard earned cash into a rust bucket.
Find a solid one that will give you some peace of mind down the road.

Yea unfortunately this truck is spec'd the same.

I just looked at it, and drove it around the guys lot. Runs well. Sadly the rust has gotten to the rear 1/4's pretty bad, however the guy had replaced the front inner and outer fenders, front doors (hence the electric mirrors) and everything under the hood is good, the guy runs a small diesel repair shop. Ride is rough, but I've never had a leaf spring straight axle truck, so I can't make a judgement there.

Anyways I told him I'd think about it, he was too honest and nice about it to lowball.

Take your 3 grand and get on a plane to Arizona or Nevada . Spend 2k on a truck and drive it home sleep in the back .same money three days work for a done truck. Your not going to fix that one in three days.

Well said sir. If I had the time I would post up about half a dozen similar burbs in my areas craigslist. No one wants burbs down here, they're damn near given away.

I've decided if I find the right truck, I'll do it. I have a week of vacation I need to use and I got to find rust-free 1/4 panels for my Accord as well. Might as well make it a 2-for

If you want a 6.2 Sub it'll be a little harder to find. Other than that, I agree with all of the above. Look for one in TX or AZ, something you can drive home. That one looks like an $800 to $1200 truck.

How can this guy own it for 6 years off and on ??
Either he owns it or he did not own it.

he and his buddy traded it back and forth a couple of times. From what I observed looking at the truck his buddy did hack work and he did good work.

This seems like a great deal if you can deal with the registration.
