The "UnOfficial Rock-a-Chief" Thread....
Well my truck has been sitting for days waiting its turn. I haven't torn into this thing as much as I would like, but I don't want this to turn into a diassembled project that can't be funded and properly put back together.
So, untill then, it will patiently wait its turn. Everyday I walk past it (to build on the Vette) and look at it as if it was the first day I saw it: - - "What the ?!?!!!!" - - - http://i35.tinypic.com/wu2ute.jpg - (photoshop at will...you have my permission) - - - Although, this past weekend (wife took both kids out of town to grandmas) I stayed home for a childhood buddy's bachelor party (whole nother wild story) and managed to work on the "Rock-a-Chief" (un-official part of thread...named by kids, what the heck ??) despite a day and a half hang-over (man I'm a light weight !) - - So...let's start at the CARB, shall we ?? - - |
Re: The "UnOfficial Rock-a-Chief" Build Thread....
When I first got the truck to the shop...I did what most people would do and "Let's see how good she runs !!"
Jumped it, and with the old fuel...it did run, but very rich. - - So I pulled the carb off, disassembled it and found this: - - http://i36.tinypic.com/28w5mr.jpg - The main jet was sitting in the bowl..(talk about a smelly, rich-running on old gas situation) !! - http://i35.tinypic.com/2egctgz.jpg - So the rebuild begins... - http://i38.tinypic.com/qye1hj.jpg - http://i36.tinypic.com/2ngfu5v.jpg - I've had this bucket of Berrymans 'Chem-Dip' for years (ever since I can remember)...good stuff...that you can't get anymore (??) - http://i37.tinypic.com/2zo9rv6.jpg - - After a few moments....It was pulled out and then pressure washed... - http://i37.tinypic.com/zlc8py.jpg - http://i36.tinypic.com/25sr6g9.jpg - http://i33.tinypic.com/jk7f41.jpg - http://i34.tinypic.com/vimyqc.jpg - Paying close attention to certain parts that may need Loctite (like jets:lol:) and the lower base to bowl screws... - - |

I cut back the chock cable housing a bit, and cut the cable a bit to clean up the years of ghetto rigging. She fired right up, and ran pretty smooth..despite an occasional misfire/pop/stumble at idle. Next will be a compression check (yea, I know...remember what your old teacher said..."Check the compression first, to make sure the engine WILL benefit from a tune-up")... Hey man...the carb needed help anyway !!! I'm sure the plugs are 'done' anyway... If all that checks out...next will be int & exh gaskets...and a new fuel line correctly bent and routed !! http://i38.tinypic.com/2r6e4qp.gif |
Re: The "UnOfficial Rock-a-Chief" Build Thread....
Cool! Glad to see you working on it.

Re: The "UnOfficial Rock-a-Chief" Build Thread....
You can still buy chem dip in automotive stores, just not in California.
|
Re: The "UnOfficial Rock-a-Chief" Build Thread....
Nice work John!!!
|
Re: The "UnOfficial Rock-a-Chief" Build Thread....
Nice, you have the same thinking I do when it comes to starting a project......Rebuilding the carb is always the first thing I do for some reason.
|
Re: The "UnOfficial Rock-a-Chief" Build Thread....
I have a gal of chem dip and have had it for years. I wanted to get rid of it but can't just throw it in the garbage. I think I will just keep it around.
|
Re: The "UnOfficial Rock-a-Chief" Build Thread....
Just add it to mine !!
|
Re: The "UnOfficial Rock-a-Chief" Build Thread....
The chemical dip is now usually known as Aircraft Stripper. Man it is some crazy smelling stuff!! You can't get away from the fumes quick enough. Congrats on the carb rebuild.

Re: The "UnOfficial Rock-a-Chief" Build Thread....
Those tape lines on the bed look familiar. That's what mine looked like before I CUT IT UP! You know you want to Rocka. Do it.

Re: The "UnOfficial Rock-a-Chief" Build Thread....
Hey Chief, I hear fumes from Berrymans is a cure-all. From S%its- coughs, colds, runny nose and what bit you on the night before.
Good to see progress being made on the "Rock-a-Chief". I think you should find another carb or two to rebuilt and then start looking for a Offenhauser intake. Get some more air and fuel to that Inline 6 so she can SING!! Keep on it. |
Re: The "UnOfficial Rock-a-Chief" Build Thread....
Glad to see you working on the new ride. No matter how small of a project a carb rebuild may seem to some, it still feels good to make a little progress.

Love where you're headed with the tape lines ;)

Re: The "UnOfficial Rock-a-Chief" Build Thread....
Nice detail John.
Just like on the Cheif. Can't wait till you get to Rockin-n-Rollin on "The Replacement":metal: |
Re: The "UnOfficial Rock-a-Chief" Build Thread....
I got a little further on the Vette and had some time for an inspection;):
- - While the truck has been sitting, the tranny has been slowly leaking...so now even reverse was out....I sure dislike pushing vehicles. - - http://i33.tinypic.com/30lcpkm.jpg - - Got it up on the lift for the first time look at the under side: - http://i35.tinypic.com/sxhrau.jpg - The floors directly under your feet need replacement...but the cab mounts, rockers, and the remainder of the floor is perfect !! - Here's another shot of the slick flowmaster split exhaust: - http://i35.tinypic.com/2ajrk40.jpg - Really dark picture...but this here is a shot of the right rear brake-line...that was disconnected and plugged....Must of been all those one-wheel burnouts that smoked the tranny !!:lol: - http://i38.tinypic.com/219s46q.jpg - More pics hopefully soon... |
Re: The "UnOfficial Rock-a-Chief" Build Thread....
Had some time to work on it a few days ago. Was able to drop that greasy, nasty, leaky tranny.
Found a broken speedo cable, and some stretched e-brake cables. Man this thing is majorly muddy/greasy underneith....Man, I really wanna drop this frame, but now is not the right time...unfortuneatly. I've decided to yank the engine and go thru it, just like I did with the SB in the Chief. It seems to be running smooth, so a compresion check first, then a re-seal, then a 'Krylon' rebuild....;) I have more pics coming, also going to do another write on a 700R4 behind the sixer. Decide why not, instead of rebuild the PG, I'll throw the overdrive in it. Anyone know where to get some 'go' parts for this 292 ?? |
Re: The "UnOfficial Rock-a-Chief" Build Thread....
I have been watching the E-bay auctions, seems to be Offenhauser and Clifford Intakes on there most of the time. I have been told the Sixes will really run nice if dual or triple carbs are installed. And headers too. A local tranny shop told me it was not easy to hook a 700R4 to a multi carb set-up. Heck, anything is possible , some stuff just takes longer to do. Read Leo Santucci's book on building sixes. He does some crazy stuff with Sixes up in the 400-500 HP range. gets into turbos, blowers and nitrous too.

Re: The "UnOfficial Rock-a-Chief" Build Thread....
Your play-by-play of the carb rebuild is the inspiration I need to do my first one. Thanks for sharing and keep us posted on your progress.
