Who makes good weatherstripping

Restoring my dads 79 dump. My dad ordered a complete kit from LMC. Needless to say we are regretting that.

Rubber bumpers for the hood are too thick. Took them out. Then we can't get the hood to shut, back is held up. What the heck it was perfect when we put it together before paint? Pulled off the new rubber cowl seal and bam! Hood lines up.

So is there a vendor that makes quality repo rubber products? This looks like fairly decent quality just everything is too thick

It's to my understanding that Precision makes the best weatherstripping and it is what I have been working with. They're a manufacturer so you'll have to find a retailer (such as GMCPaul on his website. This is where I got mine from.) So far I haven't got to use everything in the kit but the vent windows are going together nicely. The rear window seal was very loose on my CR Laurence slider but I don't know if it was the rubber or the slider. Once it was in the truck it was very tight and looked great. Have not installed the chrome mylar yet.

When you replace the new rubber from old one you should readjust the doors, hood, and sometimes the windows with new rubbers because the old rubbers wore out sometimes flattened out.
The parts may have been re-adjusted make the tighter after so many years gone by.
All most all new rubbers made will be a little fatter and will flatten in years you may have to re-adjust them again, as the years go by.

Even if you got good old GM rubbers there going to have to be re-adjustments needed in cases.
I never used LMC rubbers yet have some small one. I have used Steele rubber & SoftSeals & one more I can’t think of it. Some good some could have been better work with tweaking & adjustment .
I here your pain been there

I had good luck with Soffseal vent window seals on a 55 Chevy. https://www.soffseal.com/store/main.aspx

Was also impressed with the Steele weatherstripping a buddy of mine used on his 37 Chevy trunk lid.

Finally, I have no complaints about the beaded door window seals, glass channels, and vent window seals I got from Classic Parts. http://www.classicparts.com/

So, I must be easy to please. :)

I'm glad to happen upon this thread. I'm minutes away from confirming an order with LMC for a whole window channel kit. Is the consensus that their rubber products are subpar?! I'd always heard that they were the go-to for stuff for these trucks, but this is my first square.

Well, they are the go-to vendor for exploded view drawings!

I can't speak to their weatherstripping, but I have been happy with the few parts I bought from them -- a heater control panel, windshield wiper switch, and some radiator brackets. However, their shipping charges are based on order total. So I paid $18.75 for an order that weighed less than 2 pounds.:(

I like the folks at Classic Parts. They bought Chevy Duty several years ago, a company that focused solely on old Chevy truck parts. And if you need it, they have tech support people who can intelligently answer your questions.

I ordered a precision cowl seal to try out.

this isn't my first square body resto. Did an 87 roughly 15 years ago. i can say in that time the quality of stuff from LMC has gone from marginal at best to bad.

My exp with LMC is hit and miss also. but i agree about the shipping charges because of that they are usually my last stop. Try rock auto. the prices are good and shipping is very reasonable.

I ordered a bunch of weatherstripping from LMC a couple years ago and all of it was Precision. Very please with the quality.

LMC gets a bad rap but they do carry name brands so if the parts are sub-par it's the manufacturers fault, not LMC for selling them.

I went ahead with my order at LMC. We'll see how it goes. Might try to post before and afters of the whole interior.

I agree and disagree. True, it's not "LMC" making bad products, but they make the decisions on what to buy and sell. If they decide to buy their reproduction rubber from Bob's Weatherstripping and Firewood, because they can make an extra 3% markup, then any bad reputation that results is totally justified.

Re: Who makes good weatherstripping

I just wonder if GM is still making them . When I did my resto several years ago I got mine from the GM dealership for my 82.

Might be worth a phone call .

I always use Rubber the Right Way for rubber parts & weatherstrip. www.RubberTheRightWay.com. I have used for several vehicles and their parts are awesome. Everything is guaranteed to fit & the price is right.

Re: Who makes good weatherstripping

My experience with LMC rubber products is that they are very thin compared to OEM and the seem to not fit well. The hood hinge seals and cowl seal I got from them were not very good. The best windshield shop in town uses only Precision products. I need to replace my window run channels and beltline weatherstrip again, so I will stay away from Ebay and spend the extra money with Precision.

I think other mechanical or electrical parts from LMC are OK. I once bought a second battery tray from them years ago for my dual start battery setup and it was AC Delco. I just installed their power window relay upgrade kit and it seems to be working OK, although the length of some of their wires was about 2 feet too short. That relay kit install was my first attempt at electrical soldering (based on their demo video on YouTube.) I learned that like sweating copper pipe you need just a light coating of flux - too much flux prevents the solder from adhering to the wire.

Precision Replacement Parts hands down!

Re: Who makes good weatherstripping

Much of the weatherstrip I received from Rubber the Right Way for my truck was made by precision. It was excellent. RTRW heavily discounted the parts so I got a really good deal.
