Replacing Cab Corners
Need some advise on replacing cab corners for the 47 GMC. Do I have to drill out spot welds or just weld the patch panel in after removing the rotted area? Pictures would be helpful. Thanx in advance!!

Re: Replacing Cab Corners
There are no spot welds to drill out. Cut out the rotted section, trim the patch panel to fit that area, and weld in patch. You only need to replace the section that is rusted through - not the entire area of the patch panel. I've seen guys do this and then not be able to line anything up.
I dont have any pics, but there are a bunch of pics on this site. check out pretty much any build thread and you'll see the process. |
Re: Replacing Cab Corners
Mike, check out my build thread and I have some pictures on page 12. One thing I would recommend when you are doing it is have the door hung so that you can check the door gaps as you go along. also do what Mr Tucker said about only replacing what you need. That has been my hardest thing to overcome while on this project. I figured that if they gave you that much you must need it...lol. It has gotten me into some trouble...not as much on this truck but on my Camaro that I am also working on.

Fat Mike, I took the panel and sat it up to the old cab corner and marked the body with a silver marker(rough fit). Then I cut out the cab a about 1/2 inch away from the marker line. Put the new panel in place and made sure it fit well and the door gap was right, the scribed the body(final fit). The panel will fit better with the old out. I use a 4 1/2 " slitter wheel and cut to inside of the scribe line. Then I start tacking by skipping around till it is welded in.

Thank you to everyone. Tri5Nerd that was a very helpful 101 and hope it helps everyone else out also. I knew there were spot welds that needed attention. Also, Xpickup your pictures were very helpful and I plan on fixing my cab corners tomorrow.
