Pic of 350 V8 timing marks?
Yo! FRANKENTRUCK's powerplant is a '79 (timed from above, and just behind the waterpump), and it's timing cover came from the '73 donor (timed from the driver's side). My static marks on the cover are NO WHERE near the ones on the harmonic balancer at TDC.
I wondered if anyone could supply me with a pic of the harmonic balancer and static indicator timing marks lined up at that spot behind the waterpump so that I can get a good idea of relative position for TDC. Thanks y'all! Todd. |

Yo! No response on the '73-'87 message board, so I'll ask in this more proper forum for engine questions:

Re: Pic of 350 V8 timing marks
TDC is when the #1 pistom is at the very very top of the compression stroke//you judge all the marks off that not the other way around which is what you seem to b trying
i've found TDC is easyest to get with the pistom stop method with heads on ,heads off i just go the dial indicator route |
Re: Pic of 350 V8 timing marks
Yo! It's easy for me to time this truck without ANY timing marks, and it runs GREAT right now, but I'd like to have a reference for my timing light so I know how far advanced I have set it. My harmonic balancer marks are proper for the '79 engine, but my timing cover reference marks are on the driver's side of the cover because it came from a '73 350. The '79 and '73 are timed at different locations on the engines.
I don't want to go thru turning the engine by hand against the stop, and if I just saw a pic of the engine with timing marks lined up, I could guesstimate where the static marks SHOULD be behind the waterpump. Thanks, Todd. |
Re: Pic of 350 V8 timing marks?
What about using a degreed harmonic balancer cover and a cheapo bolt-on timing tab? I cut my tab down to just the zero mark for a pointer. Works great for me!

Yo! Y'all!
Nobody has, or can get, a picture of the timing marks with a 350 at TDC?! I thought this was where engine questions were answered. Todd. |
Re: Pic of 350 V8 timing marks?
4 BTDC is almost dead center between the top two timing chain cover bolts if that helps you any.

Re: Pic of 350 V8 timing marks?
Yo! raws67!
Thank you a million! That's JUST what I needed! NOW I have a reference to factory settings. No one on the engine forum would respond so, again, thanks! Nothing about my 350 is anywhere near stock and I'm fine tuning my initial advance, centrifugal adv., and vacuum adv. at the moment. My final timing will be custom for the engine build, so factory timing is only a reference so that I know approximately what my initial timing is. Thank you very much! Thanks to you too Gary! My new harmonic balancer is FAR better than stock and has a full set of marks thru 30 degrees advanced, everyone should have one. But you can see that I don't even need a permanent factory mark, just a reference, 'cause my final setting will be custom. Thanks, guys! Todd. |
