DT360 into a squarebody?

Been looking at options for a diesel swap into my 87 R30. I stumbled onto the International DT360 series of engines. Same displacement as a 5.9 CTD, but supposedly much more heavy duty and can make huge power. I see a lot of F* 6.0/6.4 guys swapping these as they share the bellhousing pattern and you can run the F* transmissions. I did some searching and haven't seen anyone swap one into a Chevy yet. Anyone have any experience with this engine?

The DT series of engines come from the AG division of International Harvester. The 360 is a dog. The DT 466 turbo w/ rotary pump was 210 HP & the next generation used a Bosh VE style pump w/ ATA charge cooler & If I remember right they were 245 or so HP. But the engine was produced before the front cap was reconfigured & so they split the radiator in two & was half charge cooler & half radiator.
DTs are VERY GOOD engines, have VERY THICK replaceable wet liners.
They DON"T like being run hot & lugging them will beat the main bearings & spin them. That's the two things they do, spin mains & gall pistons.
I have a 210 HP engine in a 1850 IH Loadstar w/ a BIG Spicer 5 speed & two speed axle across the road, can't remember what's wrong with it. These are some OLD ENGINES!
Oh yeah I might add HEAVY engines!;)

360 might be a "dog" in stock form, but they are very easy to bump to a reliable 400+ HP. The DT466 is a totally different engine and is a lot bigger physically than the 360. They were made through the mid-90's, so I wouldn't consider them to be that old. There is huge aftermarket support for them.

Most of these old mechanical engines are dogs until you mess with them IMO. I would put a p-pumped 360 in a truck if I could find one affordable. They are just too high in price for me. The best part of these over a 5.9 IMO is the intake bolts on to the head and is less restrictive. Most of these were a pump engines. They still can make decent power but if I were going to do it, that's what I'd want. They make a lot of parts for them due to the tractor pullers.

I've never seen a 360 with an automotive bell housing so IDK about that. Every one I've ever seen has a SAE type bell housing. You could possibly use an adapter from Phoenix Castings. Most ford guys doing this swap used the trans that came with the 360 from what I've seen.

Go for it! A friend of mine up in BC has one in a 99 Ford Super duty and it runs and sound Great! It came out of an International Dump truck and I have also seen them in School busses ! To me the bad thing is they were only produced for a few years and the rebuild parts are a little more expensive, but they will run for a long time!
