Welcome to post #1 for...
THE H8RDCPTR. (i put the omgwtfbbq as a placeholder thinking i could change it...oops)
I was lucky enough to be given most of the original paperwork tracing the trucks history. Started its life in Oklahoma, and spent some time in Georgia and Florida before coming up to WI. I have the original metal service tag and owners manual somewhere too.

Started with a 66 short-step with a small back window. The truck was in pretty decent shape or so it seemed. Had a metallic green re-paint in the 80's, some rust that I could see but nothing horrid. Had a different hood since the original had been destroyed by time/rust.

The interior was mostly clean, gas tank removed and seats replaced with a later model bench seat. Newer wheel replaces the original also.

Re: Br3w City's Project omgwtfbbq

Some more details on the project; It has a newer front suspension (newer style truck suspension i believe) lowered 4" and manual disc brakes and power steering.
The front also sports a 1-1/4" swaybar setup.
The rear is approx 5-6" lowered, with a small notch to clear the axle.
Nitro drop shocks all the way around.
Truck rear end with 3:73 posi, moser axles.
Mickey Thompson aluminum wheels.

The motor is a small block 355;
Scat cast crank
2.02 heads with the bowls polished
Comp Cams 4wd extreme cam
Weiand Sportsman manifold
Holley 670cfm Street avenger carb
Aluminum drive pulleys
Be-cool radiator / electric fan
Hooker Super-Comp headers to 2" true dual stainless exhaust.
Fabbed aluminum 13 gal fuel cell.
k&n filter setup.
https://i.imgur.com/c9Rff9z.jpg?1
It's backed by a 700r4 trans, Hurst shifter and mild stall (can't remember which one)

Re: Br3w City's Project omgwtfbbq

First step after the basic maintenance was to start rust control, body repair and trying to uncover WHAT is hidden under all that paint.
Brought home the welder and decided to start by filling some holes in the bed rail (p.o must have had a cover on it at some point).

https://i.imgur.com/XOL6kBm.jpg

Hidden under the paint were even MORE holes, aside from the 40 small ones, a few of these bigger guys were in there. Looks like they had been filled with some sort of foam and then painted right over.

http://i112.photobucket.com/albums/n...0chevy/006.jpg
A few minutes with the welder, and some quick rattle primer and it looks MUCH better.

Re: Br3w City's Project omgwtfbbq

Started on my fenders, which actually was a happy surprise. After taking the paint down, I found the the major rust was only about 5", the rest of the surrounding metal was clean and rust free. I trimmed the bad stuff out leaving a nice square hole in the fender.
http://i112.photobucket.com/albums/n...0chevy/244.jpg
Got my patch made and started the welding process....yikes I'm rusty. I haven't welded sheetmetal in probably 3 years, wire setting are a *****.
http://i112.photobucket.com/albums/n...0chevy/249.jpg
I did manage to get a nice clean patch after all was said and done, time for the filler!

Re: Br3w City's Project omgwtfbbq

While the filler was setting on that patch, I moved on to a "small" ding on my door.
It started no bigger than a quarter, but after some sanding...it kept going. There was nice baseball size dent and some wrinkles surrounding it, almost looked like someone was going to repair it but gave up. http://i112.photobucket.com/albums/n...0chevy/250.jpg
LOOK AT HOW THICK THIS SH!T IS! And thats not even the deepest part.
http://i112.photobucket.com/albums/n...0chevy/010.jpg
http://i112.photobucket.com/albums/n...0chevy/012.jpg
Got the inside door panel off and started with the hammer and dolly to straighten it out.
http://i112.photobucket.com/albums/n...0chevy/251.jpg
Now that I had it much closer to where it should be, I could start with some filler.
http://i112.photobucket.com/albums/n...0chevy/252.jpg
Soo much straighter now
http://i112.photobucket.com/albums/n...0chevy/254.jpg
Straight like it should be!

This weekend should yield more pics as the stripping process continues. I have also removed the reverse lenses, and sunk the tail light cups into the fenders for a cleaner look...stay tuned.

Re: Br3w City's Project omgwtfbbq

Hahah ya. Most of the truck is actually fairly solid, it seems like the p.o. did more damage to it then nature did. Hopefully I should be able to finish stripping the bed this week so I can start to fill those holes in the bed rail, and clean up the tailgate etc.

Most of my previous sheetmetal experience has been with newer S10's, trucks etc..working with this nice thick american metal is a relief

No blood no foul, I guess you can kick it back. I cant tell you how many times I've done that or on the bench grinder with small stuff.

Nice work Im gonna start on mine after the summer. Are those the stock tail lights fabbed into the rear quaterpanels?

BR3W CITY 04-23-2010 08:46 AM

Re: Br3w City's Project omgwtfbbq

thanks for the comments guys. I ALWAYS wear glove when grinding now; about a 3-4 years ago I had a grinding wheel on it and it slipped when I stepped on the cord. I've got a 1/4" gap in my fingerprints from that one.

62 bowtie - They are LED lens/bulbs. Its the stock size lens, with integrated led's and the stock style plug. I took the reverse lights out, and welded the stock light buckets where the reverse lenses use to mount. I sealed it from the back, and then can screw in the lenses as normal from the front.

Re: Br3w City's Project omgwtfbbq

Started taking the paint off of the drivers door. Very solid but i did get a few surprises.
http://i112.photobucket.com/albums/n...hevy/001-1.jpg
Another dent in the same place as the big dent on the passenger door. Its tough to tell what happened, but weird its on the same spot. This side is nearly as bad.
http://i112.photobucket.com/albums/n...hevy/002-1.jpg
What the heck is this? Looks like a couple of phillips screws that they filled right over. Is this a stock mirror mount or something?
http://i112.photobucket.com/albums/n...hevy/003-1.jpg
A little bit of crust on the bottom of the door, shouldn't be a tough patch though.

Re: Br3w City's Project omgwtfbbq

Sanded down the paint and bodywork on the front fender and got a nice size rust hole. A little bit worse than the other side, but handle-able. There were a couple pinholes a bit higher up too.

The gnarled steel.

And the hole
http://i112.photobucket.com/albums/n...0chevy/011.jpg
Cut a patch panel to fit. Luckily the edges were still good on the original steel, so the patch was easy to cut in.

Filler work done on the fender
http://i112.photobucket.com/albums/n...hevy/001-2.jpg

I also finished the filler over the lower door patch, and the other side has been completed (i have almost symetrical rust on this thing). All thats left now is to finish stripping the nose, and some minor touchoups on the roof and around the windows.

I've also been super busy doing some other projects, including my rem870, and my buddy's super clean '63 Impala 2door. We are doing a period-parts-only aircraft hydraulic setup on it, and I've been doing alot of fab on his battery racks, pump mounts etc. I will include some pictures of that too hopefully this weekend

What is the 6.0 coming out of?? Late model truck or... dare I say... a wrecked GTO with the matching 6-speed???

Looks good! Keep up the good work.

Just out of curiosity... What are you running for a welder?

BR3W CITY 09-08-2010 10:54 PM

Re: Br3w City's Project omgwtfbbq

Its an LQ4 from a 2003 Silverado, it will be cammed and possibly get new heads (unsure of budget right now) before going in.
http://i112.photobucket.com/albums/n...y/IMAG0010.jpg
http://i112.photobucket.com/albums/n...y/IMAG0009.jpg

As for a welder, I run a couple depending on which project. Most of the bodywork and stuff done here at my house is on a Lincoln wirefeed Mig. Its a convertible 110/220 unit, and I'm running it on 110 (I rent, can't pull a new leg in the garage), with 75/25 Argon in my tank. At our fab shop at work I'll use the giant old behemoth of a welder. I have NO idea what it is, but its the size of a washing machine and painted bright yellow. It works like a freaking charm on the bigger stuff like mounts and stuff.

Small update (no pics yet)
My drive by wire stuff showed up, and I have a complete custom harness coming from fuelinjectionconnection.
The block, timing cover and accessories have all been cleaned and painted, and I have a bigass cam coming this week. Running a TSP Tsunami, with PRC dual springs and TSP rods. My swap mounts have also arrived. This weekend I plan to take the truck out in its half-stripped form, have a little fun with the old smallblock and then start the transplant process. Pics will follow!

Re: Br3w City's Project omgwtfbbq

Well, after the above ^^ "having fun" I did manage to almost get myself in a bit of trouble.
I was stretching the legs on her down an empty biz park street, and the local pd wasn't thrilled about it. I got pulled over with NO fenders, hood, paint, speedometer, tail lights...only thing I had was my plate taped to the back window; somehow after the cop listed about 10 different things including "Undue and Unnecessary Speed", I was let off with a WARNING. wow.

Couple pics of the block painted and heads partially cleaned up. As well as the newly installed PRC springs and TSP rods.

Re: Br3w City's Project omgwtfbbq

the truck is now at my pop's place for the motor swap. Old engine has been disconnected and just sits dry in the bay until everything else is ready to go.

In the meantime I've done a bunch of work on the fuel system;

255lph pump, -8 AN Russel fuel filter, to 3/8 to the front.
http://i112.photobucket.com/albums/n...y/IMAG0029.jpg

Ford Cobra 42lb injectors compared to the stockers (24lbs)
http://i112.photobucket.com/albums/n...y/IMAG0024.jpg
And in the rail
http://i112.photobucket.com/albums/n...y/IMAG0025.jpg
Had to get some EV6 wiring adapters; the truck motors used a short Delphi MultecII injector which is VERY hard to find a good replacement for since your options are limited to the Marine 8.1's or a custom set. If you convert to EV6 and space the rail you get more injector options
