Hi, I bought a 51 chev from the niebour . It has no title so I have to get one. so my question is is there any thing specific i should do or ask for at the dmv and also where do I find vin numbers on this particular year of truck thanx in advance

Do a search on this site on DMV, this has been discussed as recently as last week (scroll down) and a few months ago too. Stovebolt.com has a vin buster section that tells where all the numbers are. Requirements vary state by state, best to check AZ dmv requirements on line then down and talk to them in person. Maybe you can get by with a bill of sale, but you might need to go through a bonded title process to make sure there are no previous owners that might claim title.

I've got a similar type of question. I've looked but nothing turned up for my particular case.

I've got a 49 GMC truck, that came with a clear title. But as far as I have looked, I have not found any VIN tags on the truck.

So, my question is: Can I just get a repro vin tag from Jim Carter, punch the VIN listed on the title, and slap it on the door pillar?

It is against the law in every State to remove or alter a VIN tag.

On my TF it is stamped on the top frame rail next to the steering box and on the top rail under the cab on the drivers side. Donb't know if it was supposed to be a "secret" vin location hard to remove to deter theft or???

Thanks for the input. I had heard about the vin on the frame, so I checked all over when I tore down the front end. Didn't find a thing.

I read somewhere that the vin was also stamped on the rear pass-side frame rail, so I'll have to check that.

I wasn't planning on changing any of my vin tag (there isn't one). I am just going to get a repro tag (blank) and have the vin stamped on it. I mean I've got the title, so it should be a legit move. I'll call my "friendly" mvd tomorrow and see if I can get a definitive answer from them people.

The AD series do not have a frame number. Just the cab plate and the engine serial, which are not the same.

Some states used the cab serial on the door pillar, some used the engine serial for registration. If you have the original engine, the serial is stamped in the pad that the distributor mounts on. So it should be just aft of the distributor base. Again, call the DMV to find out. The inspector should be able to tell you what to look for and where to find it.

In most states the DMV has their own VIN plates and they will attach one if you can meet their conditions.
