New member with a 1960
 

Hi guys,

New member here. I just picked up a 1960 Apache 10, I jumped on the Rat Rod wagon and want to get this project rolling. I am wondering the best way to lower the truck and retain ride quality. I am not trying to put it right on the ground but would like to get the tires tucked up in the fenders, somewhere around 10 inches in the rear, right now it measures 22 inches from the bottom of the rear fender to the ground, I think about 10 inches would be ideal. I would like to relocate the fuel tank also! I am leaning towards a 5.3 LS implant as well! Below is a link to the wheels I was looking at, can you run a 16x10 rear and 16x8 front without issues?

Not sure on the wheel size, but ride height 10" you might have to c notch the rear. My 60 I installed 2 1/2" drop spindles and turned the torsion bars (front) and (rear) installed 4" drop coil springs..here is a pic

no one repops 60 grill. You have a 61 grill and hood pods..

Heck I may have a 61 truck then, I had no clue, the seller told me it was a 60, but since it came from GA all I have is a bill of sale, it checks out though!

Lotta times the 60 and 61 get mixed up...sometimes you can have a 60 with 61 parts. lol I'd check the title.

Welcome to the forum from another NC member. Get the title resolved with NC since its an antique out of state transfer before you do anything with the truck requiring money. Have you verified the frame and VIN # are the same. Very important with NC. I have done several antique titles from out of state and NC can be fun to deal with, but that will be the 1st thing they will want to come see.

The frame vin # is on the driver side just over the a arm. Cab vin should be on the cab A pillar once you open the door. Once you have clear NC title....spend and play away.

Great looking project though and looks like it'll be a fun build. Keep us posted with pics and updates and if you make it down to the sandhills be sure to let me know. We have a good group of 60-66 guys down here!!

Welcome to the Forum! You have an awesome looking truck to start out with. It's great to see another wrap around windshield join, especially a 60-61! LOL ...X2 what Doobie said earlier, this is a 2.5" drop spindle torsion bar adjusted front end. I went from 4" lowered coils in the rear to bags tho. These guys on this forum are awesome...Enjoy your Truck!

You can get 10" wheels in the back depending upon the offset. Zero offset may create a rubbing on the fender wells and you may have to use a 1/2 inch spacer.

Also, watch over the top of the tires in the rear. There is an outer fender edge and bracing that could come into play depending upon the size wheel and tire and how low you set the truck.

I just went through this with 20 inche / 10" wide wheels, tried 285's, then 265's then 255 20's before I finally got them to fit. I think there is about 12.5" of room between the fender lip and the bed so tire width is not unlimited.

On the front, you shouldn't have a problem depending upon how low you choose to go. I used 2.5" drops in the front and then cranked the torsion bars up as the 8.5" 245's were rubbing the fender lips. I am rolling the lips up this week to get a little bit more clearance. BTW, mine only rubbed on the passenger side and on turns to the right while hitting a slight bump.

Great looking truck you got there...I like it a lot!!! Here are the 10 inch wheels in the rear...Foose Legends. My rear axel is on bags so I run it just a bit lower then this right now...no rubbing!

Welcome to the forum :D

The stepsides have less room for tires and wheels than the fleetsides do. Keep that in mind with the examples given here.

Us '60/'61 guys welcome you. We need the company. Not many parts that are '60'-62 exclusively are reproduced or available in catalogs such as LMC and Brothers. The Apache 10 hood badges are the only '61 parts I know of that are reproduced. Your hood bow tie is for an inline 6 truck. The V8s have a V under the bow tie. I haven't found one of those yet.

Mine is the white Panel, getting ready for the road after 20 years of storage.

The blue one belongs to a guy named Stewie but looks a little like yours.

Good looking truck, a lot better than mine! I was also told the wrong year by the seller. He had it listed as a '62 even though the title WITH HIS NAME ONE IT in the glove box read '61! hahahaha. Hood pods are the give away, and the awesome wrap around window.
Gonna follow this thread as it's basically the same as my project.
Here's a pic of my 61 Apache "BoomStick", not nearly as clean as yours.

I am getting ready to bite the bullet and order parts, title was no issue as I had the previous 2 bills of sale from GA. I have been jumping back and forth between wheel selections and have landed on the American racing wheels Rally style wheels either in 17" or 18" maybe 18x7 fronts and 18x8 rears or 18x8 fronts and 18x9 rears, which poses the next problem, they only come in 5 lug, so since I am changing to disc brakes the front is not an issue, I cannot find much info on the rear ends of these trucks (12 bolt 10 bolt etc)
I did read somewhere that it was easiest to pull the axles have them welded and re-drilled for 5 lug. Any other suggestions guys?

you probably have an HO32, not a very friendly rear IMO, just because they only come in like two ratios and parts arent easy to find. I would pull the axles and have them filled/redrilled for 5 lug. probably around $100-150.
