1954 Chev 3100 Truck Wiring Diagram
I'm getting ready to rewire my 1954 Chev truck and have drawn up a wiring diagram. See the picture of the diagram.
I'm open for critique :bo2: |
Re: 1954 Chev 3100 Truck Wiring Diagram
Unless you are running a total restoration, a positive ground is going to limit your future modifications. Alternator, Hei distributor and anything that is solid state.
What engine are you running, I see an 8 cylinder distributor and an alternator which wouldn't work with a positive ground. The diodes would be polarity sensitive. Or what am I missing? |
Re: 1954 Chev 3100 Truck Wiring Diagram
This is a negative ground system. Curious - What from the diagram would lead you to think it's a positive ground system?
I'm running the original 6 cylinder engine - I'll change the picture for the distributor. :) I'll also correct the horn relay switching to switch the power to the horn through the relay. |

I made some changes

I know that the total current in the circuit runs through the ammeter, so that kinda limits your current draw, plus it is known as a fire hazard. I didn't see it as being positive ground but the polarity would have been right. It's been a long time since I worked on anything that old. I started life with a 1950 Ford which was positive ground and six volt so I just figured your 54 was as well even though it's a GM. My apologies for the mistake. I'll take a closer look and maybe I can find my diagram of the older trucks to compare. |
Re: 1954 Chev 3100 Truck Wiring Diagram
Suggestion since you are starting from scratch. Run relays to your head lights after the dimmer switch so it's just a on/off switch. Your light will be much brighter.
If you plan on electric fans are windows run them all off relays as well.:chevy: |
Re: 1954 Chev 3100 Truck Wiring Diagram
Thanks everyone for the responses.
I've made changes on my OWN wiring diagram to include a power distribution panel and remove all the in line fuses. Also adding headlight relays. Since I've received comments asking why I'm trying to re-create the wheel and not drawing per schematic conventions - I'll not be sharing my OWN schematic on this site anymore. If anyone wants to see it - send me a PM. Thanks again for all the feedback. |
Re: 1954 Chev 3100 Truck Wiring Diagram
Did we get off on the wrong foot somehow? If so that doesn't set well with me, and I know it wouldn't with Andy, who I know personally. We only offered suggestions and critiques, which you asked for.

This site is great. I offered my version of a wiring diagram on this site and another. I received comments on the other site stating I don't know how to create a schematic drawing - and asking why I was trying to re-invent the wheel and asking for others to review. That did rub me the wrong way, so I removed my diagrams from both sites.
The comments from this site have been great and very valuable. No offense taken. I do have the original wiring diagram for the truck, but enjoy making my own personalized drawings, which others don't seem like. To each his own. I apologize if I came off the wrong way in my last response - I really appreciate everyone helping me and others. I've attached my latest wiring diagram for others to look at and let me know if I've made any major mistakes. Disclaimers: Yes - It's my own diagram and doesn't follow conventional schematic rules Yes - It's just for fun to make it my own. Yes - it contains fun images for accessories. Yes - I've kind of followed the original color codes, but not in all cases. No - I'm not creating this to replace the original schematic. Yes - I enjoy drawing for fun. Yes - I value all feedback Thank you! |

Re: 1954 Chev 3100 Truck Wiring Diagram
I as Vett glade to hear it wasn't anything we said. I was admiring your drawing and was wondering how you do it myself. My level of skill in this area is not nothing like yours sir. I'm glade you re posted the newer version. It looks great by the way but I did see one flaw.
You didn't insert no speakers for the radio and amp!:lol::lol: |
Re: 1954 Chev 3100 Truck Wiring Diagram
Andy - you are correct - no speakers on the wiring diagram! LOL
I will add them . I also need to add the sub woofer and AMP. A spotlight also may be in my trucks future. Thank you for the comments. |
