need help with final wipe (question)
 

so after painting the frist coat of primer, letting them dry, do you take and use final wipe again, or just a tack rag. before 2nd coat of primer.

I had to let them dry as I ran out of product for 2nd coat.

How long has it been since your first coat of primer?..if it's out of your recoat window youll need to sand...and wipe....if your still in your recoat window you shouldn't have to do anything....

tds says dry in one hour, top coat 14 within days

I painted it with in the last few hours.

I did find the back to basics by martin and I think I found my answer. which is NO as paint takes 7 to 10 days to cure. I am with in less then 6 hours

Dust isn't your problem when applying high build primer. Intercoat adhesion is. If you're within a few hours, carry on.

To answer your question, directly, a tac rag would be sufficient. Wax and grease remover if you've been handling it with bare hands or it's been in a dirty environment.

Steven, forget my "Basics" if your tech sheet for the product you are using says different!

As far as wiping the primer down with wax and grease remover, I think that is over board big time unless you KNOW something has happened where it may be contaminated. Hell 95% of shops never touch the car with W&G remover until the right before the paint. That's not to say that wiping down bare metal before bondo or primer is bad, that's not to say that wiping down primer after sanding it prior to another application is bad, but realistically unless you KNOW something has gotten on it, it typically isn't done.

Some shops have stepped it up over the years, were I work it gets wiped down before primer for instance, but most don't do that.

thanks so much for the advice. It truly has been a great help. I sometimes find it hard to know what to ask google to get the right info, then trust what I found... I guess I was just looking for reassurance. but thanks so much. I almost have every part of the sheet metal in epoxy just have to sand down the cab where I replaced the sheet metal and then re sand the rest of the cab that has been in epoxy for a year from the sandblaster( most of it was walnut shell blasted) thats going to be fun... I am hoping my painter guy stops canceling on me and he can paint the cab. But I will keep moving forward. going to start thing about the best was to plan a method just encase.

X2 on that intercoat adhesion. My painter guy doinked me on that kept putting me back and it turned into and issue.

Thank God this was only on the floor of the bed. Its covered by a bed mat and canopy.
