5 speed swap?
 

I have a rebuilt 5 speed from a 89 S10 that had a 4.3 engine. I am told this will bolt to the back of a small block without a problem. Anyone ever put one of these in there truck? Im not sure what model trans it is, I have heard its a Gertrag? any thoughts? And if it will bolt in, what to do about the hydralic clutch? someone make a kit for are trucks (1970) that will convert them to the Hydralic style?

The tranny should be a T5. It isn't really a bad tranny, but they aren't the strongest tranny made. The most powerful motor GM put them behind was a 305 in a Camaro. If you are running a stock 350, too much abuse may cause it to go out. If you are running a built motor, look for another tranny.

The bellhousing off the 4.3 will bolt directly to a SBC. Seveal members on the board have done this swap, i would do a search on it if it is working.

Interesting.. please let me know what you find out.. I might do that to my 72, how much extra milage could you expect with a 5 speed?

It will work, just don't drop the clutch, pull anything or plan on drag racing with it. I now a guy that put one in 84 chevy stepside pickup. Took it to the 1/8 mile drag strip on the first weekend that he installed. He had a mild 350 and just wanted to see what kind of numbers that he could come up with and to see if could get better numbers than the TH350 he had in it.
Well about 3rd gear the transmission just spilled its guts on the track. Totally destroyed the tranny. This tranny came out of a V-8 305 Camaro with 60k on the clock, they also put the T5 in Mustangs. You can put a V-6 tranny in. But don't be surprised if comes apart on you when you add a little more torque than what it was intended for.
I have T56 that is rated for 450 ftlbs torque. Cost me 2500 just for the tranny. I installed it myself on a weekend.
My suggestion, save your money and get either a Richmond 5 or 6 speed or get a Tremec T56.

the t-5 will bolt up like any 3 or 4 speed. you won't have to use a hydraulic clutch. i did the t-5 from a camaro and did not like it. it put the shifter too far back. you also have to swap to a 26 spline clutch disc and shorten your drive shaft. i ended up with a tremec tko. much better to me. there are also multiple shifter locations

The spline count is different on a 6 cyl. T5. The 305 with a T5 has a 26 spline input shaft.
