Typical gas mileage with a 454?
The dually I am looking at has a 454 in it and I am worried about the gas mileage if I buy it. The owner said the gas mileage was "horrible" :( I would only use it for back and forth to work(12 miles round trip daily)and to tow a boat and travel trailer, which hasn't been bought yet. Any suggestions and/or tips would be great. By the way I did a search on 454 and it came back with no matches
Anybody wanna buy my '86 Silverado? J/K right now! |
Most are about 8-10 mpg roughly.

Mine is an 85 dually, 454,t400,4.10 rear. 8.5 is as good as it gets loaded or empty.
A friend has a 92 with the injected 454 and he gets 10.5, his is ext cab, dually, 3.73 rear. I would love to put a 4l80e in mine- but simply dont have the funds right now. John |
This one is an 88 so it is fuel injected. It needs some body work and paint but for $1500, it's very tempting! :D If I was to buy it, the 99 burb would be history and my wife will be getting something smaller and more fuel effecient :D

why sell the 99 burb to get the dually, when you said the dually is to haul people and things?

The truck in my signature gets about 9mpg (loaded or empty) in the city, and i've gotten as high as 16mpg (empty, except for two people and two full gas tanks) with it on the highway. My average mpg on the highway @70mph has been app. 13-14mpg (loaded or empty). many folks say that's pretty good for a 454, but take into consideration that this truck runs like a clock, is always kept in excellent tune and I don't have a heavy throttle foot. 454's may be a bit hard on fuel, but DAMN you can't beat that torque!! :D For a truck, it's far better to have that torque and not need it, than it is to need it and not have it.

I just got back from a trip to Montana with my 83 Crew cab dually with a 454. I got between 6 and 8 mpg pulling a loaded car trailer both ways. That mileage is terrible. I would love to put efi and a 4L80E in that truck but I may end up with a duramax before I do that...
I would stay away from the 454 for anything you have to drive daily. I love my 86 with the 6.2 diesel for that... 23 mpg... |
Will a 427 get better mileage than a comparable 454?
