68 Camper Special w/ 396

Hey guys. Noob from SD here. I've just been presented with an opportunity at a 1968 chevy pickup. The guy says its a 396 cid camper special k30 dually with a 4 spd stick and that it is 1 of about 800 made and could be worth a lot if restored properly... does this sound right to any of you guys? I'm only 18, so i'm not exactly familiar with these older pickups, any comments would be helpful!

Also, does any one know the horsepower that the 396 truck engine put out? I know some of the 396's used in the chevelle/el camino SS put out 375 hp, but the some of the others put out 325...

1968 dually flatbed with a 396 would be a great truck for someone that loves work trucks...ME ME ME! Like my son says...RARE does not necessarily mean that it is valuable or highly sought after. My son is still complaining about me trading a short fleetside for a Longhorn! If the truck was a short fleetside with that 396...it would very rare, desireable and highly sought after.

That 396 was only about 255 hp...but lots of torque. If it came stock with the truck it should stay just where it is...great work truck!

If you are not interested in it there are lots of guys on this site that are.

I'm pretty interested in it! I just wanted to see if there was any truth in its supposed high value before i altered it too much from the original. If i can restore it to original and sell it for a nice chunk, i would have some more dough for some other projects... but if its not worth much anyway I'd just turn it into a driver for my little brother...

K-30 as in 4x4? I don't think Chevy was making them yet.
C-30 would be a 2wd.

It`a CustomCamper and not CamperSpecial;).Now that we got that straight,it`s not original if it`s a K/30(1 ton 4wd).There were a rare few Napco conversions of C/30s.I had a`71 single wheel(was stolen).I don`t see where you say this is a flatbed.A`68 factory big block with a nice group of options is a great find and would be a desireable truck, more than others.

bhp was 310 on big block in trucks. however, the big block's have torque the factory truck 350 could never dream of. i went from a 350 to a 402 in a 72 sb and it's not even close. i don't see it being an original one ton 4x4, cause they are very few and far between. pictures would help? there is another member in brookings, sd, you might want to get ahold of him. his username is 71swb4x4 he would prolly help you out and look at it with you. hope this helps

No one ton 4wds (K30s) till late 70s..
There were 67-72 one tons (C30s) converted to 4wd with the NAPCO 4wd but that doesn't make them a K30 technically..There are some of them around, but not many at all.Besides, there were no big blocks in 4wds (Factory 4wds) in 67-72 anyway so something isn't right there anyway.

yeah, i knew there were no bb 4x4's, but did napco make 68 1 ton 4wd conversions?

Re: 68 Camper Special w/ 396

Yep..That's pretty much all NAPCO did after '60 since GM built their own 4wds.They still did conversions on the smaller trucks, but they mostly did C/30s and up since you couldn't get factory 4wd on them.

that's what i love about this site!!! learn something everyday. I only thought napco did conversions on c/50 style trucks.

Re: 68 Camper Special w/ 396

i shoulda clerified... GM didn't produce them. There was in fact the conversions, but they are rare as h*ll.
