Will this AC be enough?

My air compressor is a 5 hp, 25 gallon. It is 120 or can be 240. It has a label on it that says 9.1 SCFM @ 40 PSI. Also 7.1 SCFM @ 90 PSI. It's a sears craftsman.
Can I use a spray gun with this compressor?
Thanks,
Joe

what is the air consumption of your spray gun? That's where we need to start.

Should be enough for a siphon cup gun, and more than adequate if you use a gravity feed HVLP type gun.

Nope. You might get one coat on a fender. That compressor is only about 2 hp. Typical hardware store 5 hp compressors are not true 5 hp. For autobody work you need 60 gallon, 15 cfm MINIMUM.

Here is an example of a "true" 5 hp type compressor.

True that labeled HP ratings are meaningless. What isn't meaningless is the CFM rating, if accurate. Spraying paint and using air body tools is not the same.
I have and old compressor much like the typical Craftsman, rated at 3hp / 8.6 SCFM @40 lbs, and I've never been starved for air while squirting paint. Different story using Chinese inline body sanders though. Sometimes I gotta wait for the tank to fill with those.
