Re: wood stake truck bed sides
i made a set once out of treated wood and i made another set out of poplar... both lasted although i was able to finish the ones made of poplar easier... youlll need a router and a scroll saw if ya wanna make em fancy..... I actually engraved my company name into it and used them for my signs... ive seen couples do the "bob loves susan " thing too on em.... they look cool

Re: wood stake truck bed sides
You can use any wood and make it any style you like.if its not treated wood you need to seal it or stain it.

Re: wood stake truck bed sides
oak with a thick finish looks the best imho.

Re: wood stake truck bed sides
with the wood the lght bar would basically never stay stable..
i personally would do Two slats.. not three.. then you can go online and find like "carr" removable flat bars for your lights.. i like those because i dont "always" want my light bar to be installed... and they dont leave screw holes (not specifically the arr brand but that's what i coult think of) i dont think a headache rack would look good.. i stripped mine off my truck as soon as i could.. the only thing i dont like on your truck is your rear bumper.. tht would be the "first" thing i ever change but it's all just my opinion bro |

hey i made a set for my stepper cause firstly i needed to be able to haul more crap in the back of much truck, and secondly i liked the way to completed the Hillbilly farm truck aspect of her...
Not a very good pic but you can see the proportions i used... I can give yah more detail shots if you'd like... I made mine so both long sides are seperate, and then the ends have some little brackets i made to hold the end boards at the window and at the tailgate. This works out good cause its like 2 minutes to put it in and take it out... For materials i went down to our local home(A)hole and i think it was some pine boards that were 1"x2" or 3"? i dont remember, and then i think some 2"x2" was the right size for the stake pocket hole, maybe i had to rip them down a bit... Then i just coated it with some Polyurethane clear i had laying around just to keep the water off it and give it a bit more finished look.... |
Re: wood stake truck bed sides
yes that does compliment the nice paint job which is highlighted by light grey primer.. and what is that? sticky on bullet holes he he he
very classy.. =-) |
Re: wood stake truck bed sides
Anyone else hear banjos in the background?
LOL Just playin. Dependin on what you have for tools, I would think trimming down larger uprights to fit the stake pocket tightly would be alot more solid that smaller uprights that are able to move in the pocket. Two rails look much better than three. Just my .02 Frank |
Re: wood stake truck bed sides
Wood rails are soooo redneck. Maybe that's why I like 'em! lol

Yeah thats how she was for like a year when i first got her off the 1-800-OWN-ACAR lot, they were like "what are you gonna do with it?" Im like "bag it on 22's son!" They had no idea what that meant... I think it accentuates the Grampa style mystique of it all... I think if you look closely you can see my suction cup gun rack with a putter and a sand wedge in it...
Yes they are stick on bullet holes, i think there are a couple on the stake sides too still, I would have gone for the real thing but at the time i knew some day id do a resto-mod job on her... Funny how primer can multiply, its like f*ing Bunnys! And banjo's? actually that's across the street, even in suburbia there is a blue grass band hiding in a lowely garage... Sick69 said it though... The key to success on one is making sure the fit of the posts is pretty good in the pockets, a little looser if you plan on taking em off and on, but that what i was trying to get at in my post, i think i found wood at the (A)hole that was pretty much right on for the pocket... I just screwed the rails to the posts, so it gets most of its strength from the posts being set in the pockets... just so you dont think im insane... last june when i had her dropped... Sometimes i miss the patina though... it was low maintenance... |
