1972 K10 - Daisy
 

1972 K10. Got it from ebay summer 2012. everything looks original. 350, 4 speed, LWB. some surface rust, but otherwise very solid truck. Added 4 inch lift myself in my driveway and put on some new 35x12.50 M/T tires. Replaced a few interior pieces- window cranks, rubber pedal pads. Taken it on a few 3-5 hour road trips and had no problems.

Overdue photos & update. Got a Four Wheel Camper early last year. Added some giant tripod mirrors. Did one trip with our then-11-month-old. It was fun, but not fun too.

The truck has been running pretty good and it's pretty much my daily driver now. I've been replacing typical parts like the starter and the water pump if I get any hunch that they might be plotting a mutiny.

I picked up this camper shell late last year. It was a basket case when I got it. I pulled out all the old paneling and insulation and replaced it. I also built a platform so I can use it for camping. Our oldest son, 2 at the time, and I went on a 3-night camping trip and covered about 700 miles by the time it was over.

KOOL truck, and camping you'll make some good memories...Me and my Grandson went a couple of times this yr...I have pixs on my phone... we stayed in a tent and I want to get or make me a camper to go on my truck just a place to sleep and for storage...

Short answer: the Four Wheel Camper is heavy and I got the camper shell for free.

Are you thinking about buying a camper?

The FWC, an early 90s Grandby 8 foot, weighs about 1400-1500 lbs, my best guess, and feels like a little too much for my 1/2 ton truck. The current figures on FWC website list it as 1095 lbs, so I'm not sure if the older ones were a little heavier, or I just had that much junk on board. I took it over the CAT scales and was a hair over 6000 lbs, with just the truck, 20 gallons of fuel, and the camper, no camping gear, tools or luggage to speak of. 6000 lbs is the max GVWR for my truck, so strike one.

Then I got a camper shell, my first, for free, and that seemed to fit my style a little better. I am coming from tent camping and had only ever taken the FWC on 2 trips.

Third, my wife and I have 2 kids, 2.5 years and 9 months, so camping trips are kind of on the back burner at the moment. These days what work best for me is to take the 2 year old and bug-out for a long weekend. I also find I don't drive the truck as much on a daily basis when the FWC is loaded on it, however, I drive it to work everyday just fine with my camper shell setup and that reduces the number of things I have to do to prep for a camping trip.

I still have the FWC in my driveway and cannot decide if I will sell it or keep it. I am trying to plan a camping trip for the whole family soon, and that will help me think through what setup works best for us.

I am actually trying to sell my 15' Huntsman in bed camper now. Too bad I found it is pretty rotted out so it'll probably be going to the land fill. I hear you on the weight issue. I'd bet mine is 2500lbs or more.

Hey Flashed,

Here are some pics of the inside.

The platform is (2) 2-by-12 that run parallel with the frame of the truck, set against the wheel wells, several 2-by-4 running left-to-right, decked out with 1/2” plywood.

I plan to build some drawers soon that will fit under the platform

For a mattress I am using about 3 or 4 inches of foam that I bought online.

Nice truck and camper combo. Really like the shell - I see the "Custom Camper" on the upper rear of it, is that the mfgr? If not, who makes it? Any idea approx what year it is? Your camping trips will get more and more fun as your kids grow up, very cool that you're taking them. 700 mi trip is no small feat with young-uns.

Hey Jocko,

No idea. I googled "custom camper manufacturing company" and it looks like the company is still there at the same address, but it seems like they are a distributor/installer now. Maybe they built these in the past, because I don't see any other info on the camper to identify the builder.

The guys I got it from said it was on his uncle's 1973 Ford, so he probably bought the camper shell new sometime in the 70s.

Thanks Benjamin! Very interesting. I could read the Custom Camper but assumed it was the distro company - but the fine print sure says mfgr, so that solves it.

Did a little road trip this weekend to do some work on my mom's house, 585 miles round trip.

Only got one picture on a fuel stop in Mississippi.

Truck ran good, cruised about 70 on the interstate.

Very cool. What kind of mileage does it get? My old 70 with 4.10s, 33s, a 4 speed, and a 300hp 350 would get 13 if I drove it sensible. Haha

I'm averaging 7 or 8 these days. Before the big mirrors and the camper shell I think I was getting 10 or 11, so I may have a good bit more drag with the shell and the giant mirrors.

TURN SIGNAL SWITCH REPAIR

About a month ago, I flipped on my right blinker while my hazard flashers were on and I felt something pop in the turn signal switch. After that, the turn signal lever would not return to center like it should. I had no issues for the turn signals cancelling when I made a 90-degree turn. But if I would use my blinker to signal a lane change I had to carefully move the switch back to the exact center, it would not snap back to center and the "OFF" position like it used to. Also noteworthy, this is a Summit Racing Floor Shift Steering Column, part number SUM-770702B. This part is discontinued, however, but Summit tech support suggested looking at part number SUM-771702B-NK for diagrams, instructions, etc…

When I got the steering wheel pulled off I found that a little stamped steel springy-type item, had popped out of where it was supposed to be and was just rattling around inside of the steering column housing. At this point I could only guess where it went because it was not shown in any of the pictures in Summit’s instructions.

I did a google image search for “summit racing steering column turn signal switch” but the photo showed the little stamped steel piece was different than mine. At his point I’m more than a little confused and can’t see the forest for the trees. I would later realize that the picture had an optical illusion due to the angle that made the pieces look different. The picture did serve as a clue and I was able to figure out how this little piece fit into place.

Got it all put back together, topped off the blinker fluid, and tested the horn and turn signals, then I remembered that I had no less than 3 spare or junk turn signal switches in my garage, so I figured I would post the photos to assist anyone else who might find themselves in this situation.
