400 small block timing help

What do you guys recomend timing wise for a small block 400. It has a mild cam, headers, roller rockers, and a edelbrock intake. Book says 4* and thats what im at right now but another member said i should bump it up for performance. ive had it at 8* before and with my headers heating up the starter i had a bad hot start problem coupled with the timing. Ive wrapped the starter and ran bigger battery cables so i may not have that problem to the same degree now.

Id rather not go into it that far yet with replacing parts in the distributor and stuff.

Just kinda looking to see what others with similar 400's are running theirs at.

If you don't want to change weights, then you can at least set the static timing correctly by the FAQ. You won't get the best power, but it should address your hot start issue.

Re: 400 small block timing help

well my 400 has nothing more than a larger carb and headers and a mechanic i work with said to bump it up to about 6 or 8 degrees (wherever it sounded like it was idling better) now this guy i would trust to do anything on any of my vehicles. but you dont know him so haha you can take my advice or leave it. just thought i would put it out there.

Re: 400 small block timing help

Im gonna bump it back up to 8* and see how it does starting when warm, If it has bad hot start again ill split the difference at 6*.
