I'm not doing a frame-off like some of you guys here, but I need to keep a record of my progress.
Hopefully, as I ask questions and get answers, we'll see the results posted here. That way we can see the cooperation and generous spirit that makes this board a great place! Step 1: You got to start somewhere. |

What?
You want more pics? Well, OKAY! Changed Questionable antifreeze, pressure tested radiator and changed 2 hoses and cap. Was running on 5 cylinders, changed spark plugs, cap and wires. Drained NASTY gas, shot some carb cleaner down her throat (Needs disassembly and complete cleanout) Logged 30 miles on the clock just farting around and showing friends. Layed a 5 foot one-wheel peel just because I could:metal: |

Let's look under the hood.
Noticed my fuel pump is blowing a little gas out of the weep hole. I'll check that out tomorrow. Video is a little dark, I'll make y'all a better one soon. What's that in the bed? New Rocker panels! Just need to find a buddy with a welder. |
Re: Rolling restoration thread---1962 Stepside
Nice looking truck retodd. I am not as familiar with these years and can't tell from the angle, is it a short or long step?

It's an 8 foot bed, so It's L_O_N_G!
I never cared for the 67-72 long steppers, but this one's growing on me. Plus you can get a 4X8 sheet of plywood in there, or an 8' long piece of molding. ( Currently using 4x8 sheet for a bed floor.) Having trouble finding someone to work on the split rims, I'll try the co-op Monday. I have a brand new set of 67-72 shocks, I'm hoping they will fit under her. Took a quick trip to the hardware store, Runnin' good! If you look close in the first pic, you can see my guard dog earning her keep. |

Not much progress this weekend, but I did accomplish a couple things.
Got 2 new tires for the front, worked out some electrical gremlins so all the lights work Filled the gas tank and found a little hole, gives me something else to look forward to. And then I went cruisin' Saw a friend of mine and shot a couple pics. And shot the bull. |
Re: Rolling restoration thread---1962 Stepside
Nice truck man...I also like the long step.
I like the trim around the door glass...I'm assuming thats a GMC only thing... |
Re: Rolling restoration thread---1962 Stepside
I wonder what it would look like if you took the fog lights off the red truck and put them in the bumper of the 62?

Regarding the trim; it's because the truck has the Custom option pack fitted. Another give-away is the hood emblems, they were plain ally on the basic truck and chromed on the Custom. Other extras are the cigar lighter and front bumper over-riders; I got lucky with my 63 'cos it came with the full kit, big back window, four-way flashers, clock as well as all the stuff above. Had it explained to me that a GMC is a "gentleman's" truck! ;) |

Did a little work today.
Got my fuel pump installed. Fixed hole in the gas tank. Tried to adjust my carb. (note the word tried) Got a rebuild kit ordered. Found some cool stuff in the glove box. And,yes the old NOS fuel pump came with the truck, 40 something years old and worked like new! |

P.O. kept a record of every time he got gas.
Documenting the 20,000 original miles. Every registration from "63 forward. Receipts for 4 oil changes. Cool stuff. |
Re: Rolling restoration thread---1962 Stepside
That's cool stuff for sure. Do you mind me asking what you paid for her? I voted this truck for ToTM, love the originality.
|
Re: Rolling restoration thread---1962 Stepside
Thanks for the vote!
The truck was bought locally for 2 grand. A couple e-bay sales didn't come through so the guy was just ready to deal. Plus his wife was pitchin' a fit.:lol: |
Re: Rolling restoration thread---1962 Stepside
:jdp: 2,000? Good Score. Do you have any long term plans? Or are ya just gonna drive it? That's what I would do.......
