'72 K5 Blazer CST = Yet another Build

Hello all,
Been reading the forums here for a while, then joined and kept reading, now I figured I'd start a build thread. It will probably be a very slow one, due to work, but thats fine with me it'll be fun.

Now for the good stuff, purchased a Blazer from another member here, it's in rough shape but I think it will be fun to revive it back to it's old glory. I could not see it get cut up for a parts truck. It's a light yellow '72 K5 Blazer CST with all it's original paperwork including the protecto plate. I have not picked it up yet but I'm sure many of you have seen the pictures of it. Hopefully will be able to pick it up in a few weeks.

The plan you ask?
Build it back to the way it came off the assembly line + slightly bigger tires.
I've been collecting parts for some time now, most coming from this forum, and reading up on other builds for knowledge. So we will see how it goes. If it works I'll attach a few pics I have.

Well, I set a date to pick the truck up. Will be going to get it on the 16th, the plan is to stop at a power washer on the way home and give it a quick wash. That way it will go right into the garage. The original plan was to work from the drive train/chassis up, but might be moving in the next few months, so I think I'll start tackling the rust until I know for sure. Will try to have pics of every step I do, to include picking it up. Next update it should be at the house.

Well I have the Blazer home now, it was quite the trip to make that happen. It was only a 5 hour trip to the farm, from NC to TN, so that was not bad and we made it straight there without any wrong turns. That is where things stopped being easy. The Blazer was tucked in the corner along the fence with the cows, that was not bad, with no room to maneuver the trailer. So after a little work got the trailer in place and pulled the Blazer out of the corner, all was going well until the right ramp popped of, still not sure how that happened. So this is what I ended up with.

http://i301.photobucket.com/albums/n...T/IMG_0001.jpghttp://i301.photobucket.com/albums/n...T/IMG_0002.jpg

It wedged itself to the trailer, was not worried about the rocker but it got the door as well. So more work for me, it also screwed the body line. hoping once I cut out the rocker it will come back down. Three hours later the blazer is loaded and we're ready to go. Nope not ready, thats when I noticed all the bolts to hold the top were removed Thanks for that one. The top was just sitting on the Blazer, so what do I do about that. Well I was not in my truck so no claps or tools. After some maneuvering and another hour the top is done.

We are ready to go, hurray, well on the way out we got another surprise.

A good distance from anything, a tree decided to help out and fall into the very small country road. Well as stated not my truck = no tools, so the three of use went to clearing the road by hand, did I mention small road /only way out/no way to turn around or back up. Got it done, on the way. Minus a few top adjustments on the way, or 5 hour trip turned into 19.5 hours, and here it sits waiting for it's spot in the garage.

Damn, that's some luck. Glad you finally got it home. Hopefully the rest of the build isn't like that.

Glad you made it home in one peice. Road trips are always unpredictable. Improvise, Overcome, Adapt! Now on to the build. Ah, whats a little more body work. Glad you were spared the storm. We were lucky here in Durhan as well!

I just happen to have a 72 outer grill in perfect shape if you need one. I live near Charlotte, NC. I'm am in the midst of rebuilding a 70 K5 with some upgrades of course! Also may have other parts you need. My parts blazer is a 72.

47thriftmaster 04-27-2011 10:45 PM

Re: '72 K5 Blazer CST = Yet another Build

Yup, I sure could use one. The outer grill that was left with the K5 ended up being a 70 re-pop w/o the chevy stamped on the front. You wouldn't be chance have some 72 original wheels also? Well PM me an we can figure things out.

I'm pretty happy about that as well. Still not moved into the garage yet, but I have been cleaning up some small part. Will pull the motor in the next few days, then start work on the chassis. Will not do body work until I get some bolts to mount the top.

Re: '72 K5 Blazer CST = Yet another Build

No build progress yet, but in the parts department a few things have come in. Have started my plan on the build=do the chassis first then put the body back on and start that. Will not be able to start until I locate a set of original 72 blazer wheels, due to different goals depending on what I get for wheels. I will give it a few more weeks on the wheels then go in a different direction. Anyway here are few pics of some parts

A little update of whats going on with the truck. Got some wheels in and they went to the powder coater the next day, should get them back in the next week or two. 15x8.25, 6 lug

Started to tear things down, it's going slow so I can log and get pictures of everything. Saving what I can to refurbish and put back on.

The engine in it was frozen, so pulled it and tore it apart. Turns out the the engine was really nice inside and only one piston was rusted up. This was due to who ever put on the intake did it wrong and the water jacket leaked and filled the cylinder, and it froze. Once the piston was hammered out it cleaned and took all the rust with it, so the engine is good. But since I want to put a 72 block in there I traded it for a trigger.

Cab came apart easy.

Now for the rough stuff, the drivers side turned out to be the worst. The torque boxes are toast, same with the inner and outer rockers. The floor will need some serious patch work, the bed will need a couple as well.
