If my 5 speed swap doesn't pan out in my 97 GMC shorty, I was curious about newer year 4L60E's. Mine still has the 1 piece case design, but would any of the two piece case versions work for me? Are the plugs the same shape and design? I see a lot of the new design cases vs. one piece. Thanks in advance

2pc case is the same just detachable bellhousing.

So cannon plugs are the same? No electrical differences internally?

The input shafts are different:
On the 97 4L60E they have the pilot type of input shaft where the later 2 piece bell housing 5.3L has a solid input shaft with no pilot...so research your flexplate/TC as well...Good Luck..

Not all years of the 4L60E have the same electrical plug pinout locations, so you may need to research that area for what you plan on doing with the later year 4L60E.

1999+ 4L60's have a TCC that is meant to slip under light load. Shouldn't be an issue going to one that just locks the TCC. 96 and later all use PWM TCC control.

So what about 98? I know my 5.7L has a 2pc 4L60e......

Thats great TOM, your 98 is in the transition time frame of going from one piece case to 2 piece case (bell housing is removable) ....and most likely it has a pilot type of input shaft....not every thing is black and white in life....so when your 3/4 goes out you will know for sure what type of input shaft you have with your 2 piece case...please let us know...

So back on the question,

I would keep the one piece case, no advantage of installing the 2 piece case IMO.....the one piece case can be built the same internally as the two piece case.

Beware of the Safety neutral switches are different that are on the linkage...
In 1998 the release of the LS engine, which flexplate was redsigned to fit the 2 piece case, TC hub that fits into the crank maybe different as well, no expert here but just listing items to be aware of before spending money on something that may cost more than its worth, Thanks......
