Re: Truck bed roll bars
Do you mean "light bar" or "roll bar"?
Almost all the "roll bars" I see are just "light bars" meant to hold lights, not to protect in a rollover. Most of these are light tubing and will crush in a rollover. Rollover protection requires substantial strength and design. I would be very interested in true rollbars for trucks that mount in the bed. |
Re: Truck bed roll bars
have a local weld shop make one. Simple welding and bending. shouldn't be too much.

Those light bars just mount to the bed floor and are thin pipe like exhaust tubing. |
Re: Truck bed roll bars
I bet you could pull an rops off an old tractor and make it work

If they didn't collapse, the bed floor would not hold up. Those are attached to SHEET METAL not the frame, even if they are better than exhaust pipe. |

Re: Truck bed roll bars
sorry I don't have pics of one for a stepside but I want some of these complaners to know that the chrome rollbar my father purchased in 83 for the 78 gmc he had has 1/4" walls and came with kickers that bolted under the box from the frame to the rollbar in the front and spacers that went under the bed from the 2 bars that ran between the fenders to the frame back there, the bar itself is still around but my brother forgot to pull the kickers when he sold the 87 a year ago that he installed the bar in, needless to say my dad was a little hot bout that, and also the black dual tube I have is 1/4" wall on the 2 front hoops and between 1/8 and 3/16 wall on the bars that run between the fenders, I plan on modifying my bar to fit a stepside once I get the box built for my 85 K20 "Clifford"

Atleast someone understands, get pics when you do end up mounting the bar |
Re: Truck bed roll bars
Not the first time I seen people talk crap about them, not sure why they do. Regardless of how worthless they are, they are better then nothing at all and most people only use them for light bars anyways.
I have one on my step, I'll get some pics. I also welded plates to the cross 'beams' under the bed so that the ROLL bar would bolt to something more solid then just the wood floor. Mine came with the truck when I bought it, the main bar is one piece. I looked into a new one and all i could find was multi piece ones, they looked like junk. Just dont get a multi piece one. These dont really show the bar in detail, not sure what ur wanting to see but this is what I already have. I will take some pics of how I mounted it when I rebuilt the bed. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...hevy/Truck.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...evy/Truck7.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...evy/Truck4.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...evy/Truck3.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...evy/Truck9.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...vy/Truck19.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...y/IMG_2871.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...y/IMG_2966.jpg |
Re: Truck bed roll bars
Sick ass truck there, thats what i want mine to look like when im done, what size lift?
|
Re: Truck bed roll bars
35's with 4" Thats what the truck looked like when I bought it.
Believe it or not I worked on it for another 5 months after I bought it. Rebuilt everything from the body down, rebuilt the bed, rewired the whole truck, and did lots of little other things. It now has a 6" with the same tires, now the suspension can actually flex. last two are after I rebuilt the bed. I'll get more pics this weekend. Im not big on taking pics during a build, rather build, but did lots of things that could save others lots of trial and error. So should do a build thread, help others like they have helped me with their threads. Just that all the pics will be after the fact. |

Re: Truck bed roll bars
with 4" the 35x12.5s didnt hit anywhere during normal driving and some minor flexing, but I never really tried it out. Bought the truck drove a little around town and then tore it down. Now with the 6" thats made to flex and 1" body lift on cab only the front tires will hit at full flex and turned all the way. Bed does not have a lift and tires wont hit. Rear springs are 56" vs stock 52", so they are really flexy, plus the rear springs are only 2" lift = more flexy vs 6" lift spring, the other 4" are from a shackle flip.
Here are some pics, I would guess this is about the limit of the 6" lift, this is with 1" body lift on cab only and 35"s. The truck was still unfinished here so some stuff may look incomplete, I had just got it drivable again and this was the closest place that I could chance driving to so I could test the suspension. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...y/IMG_2677.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...y/IMG_2676.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...y/IMG_2675.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...y/IMG_2674.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...y/IMG_2673.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...y/IMG_2672.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...y/IMG_2671.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...y/IMG_2266.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...y/IMG_2265.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...y/IMG_2094.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...y/IMG_2050.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...y/IMG_2049.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...y/IMG_2036.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...y/IMG_2716.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...y/IMG_2866.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...y/IMG_2860.jpg |

Here is the bar that came with my stepside, have not decided if it goes back on or not. Itīs not in one piece, legs are loose, if I put it back on it will be welded solid. It was rattling all over the back before.
