Need info on stock v8 bellhousing cross member vs I6

I picked up a 65 swb truck a little while ago. Decent truck but the more I look the more I find whomever built it did not worry about doing things right. It has a 350 engine with a sagina 4 speed in it.

The engine is mounted in the forward V8 position with the correct towers. However what I noticed today is someone fabricated "extensions" (ie steel plates) from the bell housing to the original I6 cross member. The original x member is much further back than the bell housing so these span the distance.

My question, is there a different bell housing cross member for the V8 vs the I6? Or is the same x member used but located in a different position?

Any info is appreciated.

Thanks
Scott

the engine should be located in the 2 rear holes on the frame for the eng mounting and then it will sit in the proper place under the b/housing.
there is not actually a forward eng setting there . the 292 eng mounts in the forward hole on the passenger side and the rear holes on the drivers
all the the other engines were designed to mount in the rear holes

If I understand the question right, the answer is that both V8 and I6 use the same cross member and bell housing for stock manual transmissions, and the cross member location does not change ( I have no idea how an automatic mounts as have never owned one ). V8 and all but 292 I6 use same motor mount pedestals in same locations. 292 uses a unique pedestal mounted further forward on just the pass side.
A good way to tell if things have been messed with is if they are bolted to frame, as all I have seen are riveted if original.
This info applies only to factory original, hope it helps.
Good luck, Tom

with an a/trans the b/housing crossmember is not used and there is a rear trans mounting and crossmember there.
all is factory

V8 and I6 use the same bell housing, mounted in the same holes.

Thanks guys for all the great info. I havent worked on many of this generation, usually dabbling with the 67-72 trucks. I know in 67+ they have the V8s mounted in the front holes, I6s in the rear. Seeing this truck had the same holes available, I assumed the 8s were originally in the fronts. See what happens when 1 assumes.

Just for somebody reading this post, the 60-62 235 i6 use a different bellhousing and will not bolt to a V8.

Just to confirm, in the '63-'66's the small blocks mount in the exact same rear location as the 230/250 I6's do. They do NOT mount in the forward location as in the '67-'72's
