Love your wrecker, especially with the 292 in it. I think they are a little hard to come by. I take it that the Allen Farms and the Allen Body Shop are connected? Enjoy

Deer Hunter your not to far away at all. Our family wrecker service began in August of 1936 in Mooresville. By my grandmother and grandfather. The farm was bought in 1994 and from my wifes interest in animals, which came later. The Chassis was bought new by our family in May of 1968.

This was taken back in 1974. The truck was last plated in 1985

I'll be following along for sure.. Brings back fond memories from almost 40 yrs. ago for me. When I was in elementary school one of my friends Dads had a beautiful 68 C30 wrecker he got dropped off in every day. It must have had glass packs or Cherry Bombs on it because it sounded wicked...

Lots of rust from sitting in a field for 30 years. Ken, my memories revolve around the body shop and wrecker service as I grew up. Looking back they were the good ole days for sure.

Sweet project, especially since it's got family history! You sticking with the 292?

Yes. Keeping the 292 stock. Just adding headers to it. There was an issue with the motor soon after it was bought. We fought with Chevrolet on it. They replaced the engine with another 292 but it is a 1970. The frame and cab are in bad shape due to rust. I've got to find another cab and brackets and braces to reinforce the frame.

I found a good cab in Golden Colorado. Picked up a fender and other parts. A long drive there and back.

I found a good set of original doors, inner fender skirts, and radiator support in California. Had them shipped with no issues.

Deer Hunter. I ordered and had shipped a used hood, fender, cross member brackets and braces from East West Auto Parts in Oklahoma. Ken Freeman is a super nice guy to deal with. I reinforced the frame where it was needed and used Chassis Saver paint for protection. Added new cab mounts. My engine is at my builders shop. New process 4 speed transmission and Chelsea power take off and being rebuilt as well. All new brake cylinders and nos brake parts. Drive shafts and power take off shaft are being rebuilt. The wrecker is a 133" wheel base.

A work in progress and making headway. Using Dupont K2 primer on my parts. I got my wheels back from powder coating. I'm keeping the 7.00 X 18" factory split rims. It's a work truck. I've been ordering parts from LMC, Brothers, Classic Industries, Classic Parts, Bowtie Bits, Orange County Truck Shop, Southwest Classics, and In Line Tube. Prices have varied quite a bit for items. Price checking has made a huge difference.

Re: My 1968 C30 Wrecker rebuild

It's time consuming and costly and hard work. lol. I've been so busy working two jobs and trying to work on this. I'm behind in posting anything on this. It's been a while in the build. I'm getting to a stopping point due to cold weather, so now I can post. Trying to heat a non insulated pole barn is costly.

I got the engine back from the rebuilder. The transmission and power take off was redone as well. Chuck Patterson of C.W. Patterson did my drive line and PTO shaft.

I got the cab painted in the factory colors. I got the cab mounted on the frame and started doing some assembly.
