sbc block head locating pins
 

What is the best way to remove these? Of coarse I have one each side almost flush with the block. I may be able to get a vice grip on it but I don't want to destroy it and have to start drilling. Any thoughts?

I have previously used a propane torch to warm up the surrounding block surface then grab the pin with a pair of vice grips. The cast iron will expand faster than the steel pin.

I lay the vice grips parallel to the block surface and twist the pin back and forth while trying to lift the pin out.

If it snaps off, you will have no choice but to drill out the pin hole....always use a center punch to accurately mark center of pin before drilling.

Do not cool the block with water after the pin is out, let it cool naturally...hitting it with water may cause it to warp...

They are pretty much flush with the block. I'm sure they were like that when I pulled it apart. I thought about drilling them but how about if I just got some 1/2 threaded rod put it in a head bolt hole and use it like a guide pin. Drop the head on get a few head bolts in and take out the threaded rod. How important are those guide pins?

These pins are necessary to correctly align the head on the block.

If the pins are unable to be grasped with vice grips, I would drill them and tap the pins and use a bolt to extract the remaining shell...

The pins measure 0.316" in diameter so you should be able to drill them with a 3/16" drill and tap 1/4" ...this should give you enough bite to remove the pin remains.

The pins are only 0.629" long so don't drill too deep.

Replacement pins are readily available from most suppliers.

Ok I will give that a go in the morning. I have to order some other parts from Summit. They have them i'll just add a couple to the order. Thanks much for the info i will try to take some pics at the drilling party.

Suggest if you are concerned about keeping the drill at 90 degrees to the block, grab yourself a 90 degree jig like this one...
