Carb issues?

The truck is a 51 chevy with a 1961 235 1 barrel Rochester. I started it up today and ran it for about 25 minutes and then it died and I went to start it up and the air cleaner blew off and the i tried it again and my son said gas blew out of the top of the carb, it looked like old faithful he said. So I am not sure what would cause that. I have been thinking I need a new carb anyways. Thanks, Jason

Re: Carb issues?

You have dirt in the needle & seat or the float has a hole in it letting gas fill in.

yes, as wrenchbender has said, your needle & seat is somehow stuck not allowing the gas to flow thru. a simple carb removal and possible carb spray out may do it, but if not, have someone take the carb apart and clean it completely.

really? backfires are caused by carbs running over? new one on me.

hint: carbs running over don't cause sparks in the intake manifold. sparks in the intake are caused by ignition problems like closed up points or carbon track in the distributor cap. They can also be caused by extremely lean mixtures like no choke on a cold start. in this case the flame in the chamber burns so slow that it's still burning when the intake valve opens next time around.

In general, most carb problems usually end up being ignition problems.

Re: Carb issues?

I had the carb cleaned and rebuilt and it does run better and no more geysers coming out of the carb but it still seems to lack power when the engine is under load. When it is in first gear and I take off it will go but not with much power. What are your thoughts on this?

Tmoble has some good ideas. The timing may be slow. Check & see if the points aren't hardly breaking.

Re: Carb issues?

I put a new cap on it and I did move the distributor a little to the right and it does seem to have more power but not quite like it should. Could my distributor be bad? I dont know to much about them.

Re: Carb issues?

I did adjust the distributor a little more to the right and the 235 is running really good in my opinion, it seems to have the power it should. Thank you guys for all your help, you guys are a lot of help and I really appreciate it.
