Photobucket is pulling a fast one, so beware.

Those of you with Photobucket accounts (like me), better check 'em! It seems they're freezing all the free and low fee accounts and now charging $399 per year to re-establish your account. If you don't pay the ridiculous fee, not only will every pic you've ever posted to any forum vanish but you'll also lose every pic in your account! This isn't some scammer trying to get your $$$, it's Photobucket's new policy. They've updated their 'terms of service' as of June 28, 2017. I learned about this recently and couldn't believe it. I'm going to lose my whole build journals.

I hope everyone has saved their build pics on their computers!

Re: Photobucket is pulling a fast one, so beware.

It looks like my images are still on the photobucket site. Another web page says you can still view the images on photobucket just not if they're on another site.

Forum software sometimes allows copies of images to be saved locally but I can't imagine how much server space that would occupy for a busy site like this one.

Just to be safe I'm getting all of my images from pb right now.

So what do to?

My build thread is the journal of my truck build over about 6 years so far. I have all the photos in my iPad too but what should I do to keep from having all the pictures in the thread disappear? Go back and manually embed the pics from my iPad instead of linking an IMG code from Photobucket? Because I am not going to pay them $400, that's for certain!

Re: Photobucket is pulling a fast one, so beware.

This article suggests some alternatives. Your pictures wouldn't display in your threads unless you could edit the links but the photos would be available.

they arent getting rid of your account. the new ToS just say you cant use them as a 3rd party host except with their top account. more info here

Re: Photobucket is pulling a fast one, so beware.

You don't have much choice but to rebuild all your threads. I'l probably use google photos .....
There is some talk about a class action lawsuit ..... due to sudden change of TOS without warning.
But unlikely to happen.

More likely they will adjust the cost down due to all the negative feedback and press ..... but no way to know.
Really sucks due the people that had years and years of builds on there. Worse for people like military or personnel who used it for tracking members of their company or clubs etc.

Yup - sucks.

Re: Photobucket is pulling a fast one, so beware.

i see this photobucket thing as a short term problem
someone bought it hoping to make a bunch of money and will find out that we have backup pics
the real losers are all the diy forums with an endless wealth of information all lost to this ransom demand
i doubt if many commercial operations use photobucket for this reason

i use photobucket for convenience as i post pics to multiple forums
always figured they'd eventually go to pay, but i was thinking $25 per yr which most people would pay
even with 2000 pics on photobucket i only use 3% of my free storage quota, they are safe on photobucket for now
but if they won't ever allow free 3rd party linking they can delete my account today

f' you photobucket :D

you have to hit a bandwith threshold to get locked up

Re: Photobucket is pulling a fast one, so beware.

I've had two pay photobucket accounts for years. One that is more for family stuff and what not and my mr48Chev account that is a "Pro" account.
Changing would suck for me as I have around 25K photos between the two accounts

I should have said that I got notices on both accounts years ago when they were free that I had gone over the free space limit and needed to pay to get more space.
I actually first set up the Mr48Chev album because I was filling up my other one too fast.

Re: Photobucket is pulling a fast one, so beware.

I did find the info an unless a class action suit takes place I'd believe that a lot of us will migrate somewhere else. I can't afford 800 a year to keep the two accounts up.

Re: Photobucket is pulling a fast one, so beware.

The problem with this site here is that they stopped letting us EDIT our own build pages.... so you cant go back and fix any picture links like you want to. Some of mine disappeared from FB and I cant go back and fix them....

I dont know why CHEVY TRUCKS did this.... I guess because some yea-hoo deleted a bunch of their own files???? If somebody wants to delete their own information THEY POSTED on their own page or their OWN comments, who cares? Delete them.

Re: Photobucket is pulling a fast one, so beware.

this class action suit talk is really funny, there has to be a loss for there to be a suit. your photos are safe on photobucket as long as you want according to the new ToS, so there isnt a loss.

ptc, paid members can edit all of their posts ad infinitum

its not total uploads, bandwidth is total views per day.

Re: Photobucket is pulling a fast one, so beware.

Both of my accounts are paid accounts. I passed the capacity of the free account years ago on the first one and opened the MR48Chev one mainly to post car stuff and events on. It has just over 13K photos on it. I pay 35 for one account and around 60 for the other now.
And yes class action suit was the wrong term but I can't go back and change that now on here.
I've been wanting to start a website anyhow and maybe this is the incentive to do so.

my comment wasnt directed at you, directly anyway. there is a lot of chatter about class action suits over this and I just shake my head. actually with your PAID accounts if they ever told you it would allow third party hosting then you would be the one a class action suit would work out for.

decades ago I was out at 11:30 pm picking up a girlfriend from work on christmas eve, streets COMPLETELY deserted. I came up to a yellow light at a big intersection and went through, the light turned red right as I went under it. pulled over, no sympathy, should have framed the ticket. didnt have a lot of money back then for the $230 failure to stop so by the time I paid it there was an $85 warrant attached. no problem, my fault, paid that too.

another decade goes by, I get pulled over on my way home from a christmas party, literally three blocks from the first ticket. everything is in order, clean record, all the right paperwork. oops! 10 year old bench warrant for the original ticket. I am hauled to jail, no OR release because of the age of the warrant. have to pay $500 for the warrant, no court date given because the original charge is showing as paid in full. pay another $375 for impound. Protest to courts, they tell me "you arent the only one picked up on a 10 year old warrant, just be patient it will get sorted".

a year later I get a notice saying, so sorry, computer glitch reactivated old warrants and we dont know which ones until someone gets PULLED OVER and PUT IN JAIL! there is a class action suit, if you have been charged please send copies of all costs and receipts. so I send, another year and the next letter says the suit is won, expect my disbursement. I was really excited what I could do with this almost $1000 windfall (of money I should have kept in the first place). another month, another letter, a check.

for $31. the rest of my settlement was "legal fees". I threw it away.

TL;DR: class action suits SOUND like good things. they frequently arent.

Re: Photobucket is pulling a fast one, so beware.

Photo bucket has sucked for years. Ever since the first "upgrade" they have been plagued with pop ups and slow performance. Unfortunately all my forum journals are hosted by them also. I have all of my photos saved on my computer but my build threads will suffer. Photobucket will soon be gone because very few will put up with a crappy site that charges too much.

Re: Photobucket is pulling a fast one, so beware.

JoeDoh that reminds me of the "sucker light" for lack of a better term on West Yakima Avenue in Yakima, Wa where we cruised on Friday nights in the 60's. At something like 11PM all the lights on that end of the street turned to flashing yellow except one that still was a stop light. I went under that one one night and it turned red when I was in the middle of the intersection and got pulled over by the same cop who had almost run me over an hour earlier doing a U turn in the middle of the street to chase after some guys doing a cross walk to cross walk contest of speed.
Cost me 15 bucks in that instance.

I'm not sure what I will do about the photo storage thing yet.

Re: Photobucket is pulling a fast one, so beware.

I don't know if it is a photo bucket glitch or not, but I can see the pictures if i force the page to reload 5 times. I click on the posted photo hosted by photo bucket to open in a new tab and get that third party info crap. I then force it to reload 5 times and on the fifth time is shows the photo...

Interesting. I right clicked on a picture, selected "view image," then refreshed the browser by holding shift and clicking on the refresh arrow. Wouldn't ya know it... the image loaded properly!

WHo thinks "the cloud" won't be next? If you don't pay Photobucket can they retain the pics. claim ownership and all rights? Talk about theft.
