pic's from lugnutz of what's behind the shaft aka non caged non tapered loose bearings, wafer bearing and shim or shims. They all transfer to the jeep shaft and go back in the same order as you remove them. if it hasn't been stated " carefull of the loose bearings on the inside, they may fall into the trans and you will have to dig them out, rotate case upside down etc."

Re: T5 T-5 transmission to 235 inline or V8 with 10 spline the easy way

Like Newfisher said, there's a high chance that a few of the loose roller bearings could fall inside the case when you remove the original S10 shaft. Tilting the whole thing so the input shaft points at the ground will allow gravity to work to your advantage. There are 15 loose roller bearings, so make sure you get them all. Use vaseline (or translube) to make them sticky when you install them inside the new Jeep shaft.

As they always say, "The devil is in the small details". It's not difficult but needs to be done properly or you will get premature failure.

I have a gazillion photos to share if needed. I'll keep following this thread and thanks again to Newfisher for getting this posted on the forum. I've been too busy to post it.

Found one locally for $100 from an s10. Maybe I could find a Jeep one? Does the Jeep pattern fit our bell housings?

S10 T5 needs to have a Muncie (Chevy) pattern. The 1993 and earlier S10 models should be correct.

You need a new Jeep T5 input shaft from a transmission parts supplier. The Jeep shaft needs to have 10 splines and 21 gear teeth. See photo posted earlier on this thread. I would not waste time looking for a used Jeep shaft.

Use the s10 and grab a jeep input ( see the part numbe I listed) and have the driveline shortened, mod your shifter youre done! Especially if you got a mechanical cable style speedo.

I'm really excited because I just solved the DRIVEN GEAR problem I had with my T5.

Basically, a TH350 driven gear housing and driven gear are perfect for a cable speedo connection T5.

Getting the speedometer to read correctly will require the correct combination of 4 things - rear tire size, rear differential, DRIVE GEAR and DRIVEN GEAR.

A cable speedo connection T5 usually has a red or blue DRIVE GEAR. The BLUE usually has 7 teeth and the RED usually has 9 teeth.

Different tooth count TH350 DRIVEN GEARS are still available.
Also, a TH350 DRIVEN GEAR housing is a perfect fit and can be used to replace the original T5 DRIVEN GEAR housing.

My T5 originally had a 22 tooth DRIVEN GEAR and a RED DRIVE GEAR, but with my 3.73 rear it will give me an incorrect speedo reading for the tires I plan to use. I have a BLUE 7 tooth DRIVE GEAR for my T5 and an ONLINE CALCULATOR tells me I will need a 19 tooth for a 28" tire or an 18 tooth DRIVEN GEAR for a 29" tire.

I just bought a new TH350 gear housing and an 18 and 19 tooth driven gear. They fit perfectly. Problem solved!

Good write up NEWFISHER. I may do a T5, but so far a TKO600 is what I'm thinking of for my 292 when its done. Not that a TKO500 wouldn't work...But I like the closer ratio of the TKO600. :chevy:

Now the next piece of the puzzle. The T-5 being 3 inches longer... When shortening the drive shafts in a long bed with a two piece drive shaft which end of the drive line gets shortened? The front shaft or back half. This my effort to compile all of the necessary information to present a build to proposal to my "keep of funds" or I call her my wife.... :)
She won't want to hear BS about extra stuff being bought because I f'ed it all up.

Thanks

Only the front piece of the 2 piece drive shaft will need to be shortened. The distance from the carrier bearing to the rear diff will not change (unless you cut the frame).

Here's an article where they shortened a 2 piece shaft after a T5 swap.

The article assumes a lot but does go through the basics.

swapping to a jeep input shaft is the only way to go! As of today i can do swap for $54 shipped to my door from summit racing! the bearing is just a A5 timkin, 1975 chevrolet c10 wheel bearing $5 at oreily's! total $58 and some time! last one i ordered was $82 delivered, overpaid by $24! check it out or spend $150 delivered for adapter! i know for $50 i can build one and that includes the 3" hole saw. Here is youtube link of my buddy building one for his 1932 chevrolet truck! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zYyNJnFc4rE

For $50 you can build the adapter then you still have to buy a 14 spline clutch. You will also have more time building the adapter and more time installing the cluch. Jeep shaft for the win

jeep input is clearly the way to go and if anyone has cheaper source post it!

$250 is the going rate on a mechanical tail shaft one out here. Giving away the electro ones as you need to spend more to make them mechanical spedo than they are worth.
They are not giving any T5's away around here! This and power steering were the only changes I wanted to make on my new to me 65. I have been checking around on Craigs list, and Ebay for 2-3 weeks now and all I find is big bucks.

I was going to ask about options other tan the T5, but I do not want to step on the OP's thread. I will start a new thread in a day or two to see if I can get some idea's .

By the way, Lugnutz and Newfisher, great thread!

Awesome. I would also recomend a shift lever bushing. Takes any slop out of the shift and feels silky smooth! Cheap upgrade.

Re: T5 T-5 transmission to 235 inline or V8 with 10 spline the easy way

Newfisher, I've been checking out this thread, and I spent some time on Lugnutz T-5 pages and now I'm fairly confused.
Looks like I can do this cheaper than re-gearing the torque tube rear end in my wife's '54 panel. I've already got a Nova rear end laying around the shop I can use to replace the rear end. Got a set of wheels I can use on the back until I do the disc brake kit for the front. The perch kit for the rear end is in the $50-60 range. I'll check Summit for the input shaft, as Crown wants almost $90 for theirs. The trans I can source thru a local yard for $300.
Only question I have left to ask after reading all the T5 info, is what's the tag number on the trans you used? This might work better for me than "out of an '89 S-19 with a 6 cyl" when I go hunting since I'm looking for a specific tooth count on the input shaft and I think I'd also prefer the non world class for the brass syncros.
