I assume you are trying to get the old tumblers out so you can just replace them in the old lock. the hard part is they need the old key to enable you to turn the lock set to get the tumbles cylinder out. I would suggest carefully dissassembling the old one, with a drill if required, but look closely at the new set so you don't damage anything other than the old tumbler cylinder. pry the cover off and then work your way in or whatever it takes. once it is out then the new set simply slips in. there is a small hole in the face, next to the key hole, where a pin (paperclip) can be inserted and, if you had the old key, that is where you would turn the key to on, insert the pin (paperclip) and then turn the key backwards all the way, with a slight tug outwards, until the tumbler cylinder comes free. if you could drill out the tumblers without damaging the lock you could still do that. just be carefull that the drill doesn't grab and suck the bit in too far, damaging the switch. worst case scenario the new switch won't break the bank.below is a youtube that shows how to do it

Re: ignition switch

if your truck has matching door locks and glove box locks take the new and old lock to a locksmith

or try the ogre method... most any old truck key will slide into the tumbler
insert key and wiggle the key while turning the lock slightly, the key will eventually turn
then use the paperclip to remove the tumbler

works with most any old worn out lock even the double sided snap-on toolbox locks :D

Re: ignition switch

Old lock may still be in the dash.

I never throw a car key away and quite often an old worn out one can be jiggled to unlock the switch. Then it is paper clip in the hole, push the little brass pin and pop it out.

You can drill the center out of the tumbler but you still have to get the brass pins out that lock it from turning.

Thanks for all the help.I was hoping I did not need to drill, done that before and it did not turn out good.I don't have a spare key,I bought the truck from a rancher and it was out in a field.Tomorrow I do know where there is an old bone yard of 55-58 trucks about 30 of them, guy will not sell any of the trucks but has let me go take pieces before,I do need a few more parts for the dash so I think I will go look there.

Re: ignition switch

if you can find an ignition switch from a stock V8 truck it will have the start function built in off/on/start
otherwise the 6 cylinder trucks only had off/on no start
find the vin tag V8 truck vin started with V

Re: ignition switch

Well guess what.....I drilled out the tumbler without hurting the switch, didn't think I could do that, put new tumbler in and Acc,off, and run,no start,so I guess i need to find another switch

Re: ignition switch

Was that a six cylinder truck originally? Foot stomp start? No start on the ign switch on those if memory serves right. V8 switches had start on them six cylinder switches didn't. I think my 57 Panel that came with a 235 had a push button starter on it when I bought it with the 327 in it.

A switch for a V8 truck and an added wire to the starter solenoid should fix it if you want a Key start rather than a push button start.

Re: ignition switch

yes, stomp start for 6 cyl.
if you had a push button it was converted from 6 to v8

Re: ignition switch

My truck did not have a stomp start,as a matter of fact there was no motor in the truck when I got it,can't remember if the switch I have was in dash on laying on the floor.Well went to the bone yard yesterday gut let us go look around,I was looking for a ignition switch,a headlight switch and a stock radio ( radio does not need to work just filling the hole). There was about a dozen TC trucks there, all have been there to long sinking in the mud, rusting away,I found a couple parts I was looking for but they are junk, and no radios just too bad about the trucks
