EGR Delete?
I have a 1997 5.7L Vortec that is running rough, so rough that it stumbles and eventually stalls on me and won't restart, even with a boost. Have to wait an hour or so and then it fires back up (when boosted).
I thought I had plugged cats (original, 21 years old), but the more I look online the more it seems like it might be the EGR. How do I know for sure? And is it recommended that I delete it? Can I just unplug it for now? Appreciate any help I can find on this. |
Re: EGR Delete?
For testing purposes, you can unplug it or use a block off plate.
You will get a check engine lamp. To permantly delete it, you will need a tune The EGR valve should not be open at idle or when starting. You can unbolt the valve and see if there is a chunk of carpon keeping the valve open. Have you checked fuel pressure? Have you checked for spark at all cylinders? |
Re: EGR Delete?
Thanks! Should I try unplugging it while it is stumbling or running rough? What would happen when I do? I have not checked fuel pressure, but it has a brand new pump. Have not checked spark.

Doubt it's the EGR
Even if the EGR were stuck, it wouldn't cause it to not immediately restart.
But since you have to wait I'm going to say the FPR is shot and it's flooding the cylinders out nearest it's location. It is a common problem with CSFI. Fuel pressure gauge will find the problem real quick. As will looking at the plugs near the FPR. If that's the problem and you're going to go through the trouble to change it, just opt for the new style injectors and do the whole spider if it hasn't been changed yet. If you do buy the spider, everything sold no matter who's name is on it are made by Standard. So that should help you find them cheap if you decide to change it. |
Re: EGR Delete?
I had to change the fuel injection spider on my 97 Tahoe and had the same symptoms you have. You probably have a strong fuel smell from the tail pipe.
I also had to do this a couple of months ago on my daughters 01 Blazer. I bought a used one from injectorpros1999 on ebay. It was guaranteed for life. Kinda hard to beat. PM me if you want more details. I have been thru this twice in as many years. Im starting to get good at it :) |

Re: EGR Delete?
If you can swing the extra cost, you be better off. You will also need the upper manifold set.

Re: EGR Delete?
Here's the part number for the manifold set. you should replace the fuel filter too when doing this job.

Re: EGR Delete?
Thanks to both Speedy and 61 FL Apache, I bought the kit and installed it. Seems to run better but I appear to have other problems...
