How many 1979 Chevy Sports produced

Do any of you guys know how many 1979 Chevy sports were produced. My documents say 304. But I am thinking that is the number made in Oshawa, ON Canada. any thoughts?

I assume you got the number from George at GM vintage ....which would be the number sold in Canada.

Canadian sales are typically 10% of us sales.

So there were quite a few sports sold ...but very few survive in original condition.

I have 2 79s ...one restored and one project

I am still looking for an all original under 10,000 mile one ...there should be some out there but I have never seen one

Back in the early 80's, a guy back home had a 2-tone blue sport. He beat it up bad. Not quite sure if it is still back home or not!!

Mine is a '79 grey and black with an ugly pumpkin orange stripe going down the side about half way through a frame off, but have to say I do not plan on going back original colors. All original, except a 3/4 drop and mild pretty on the engine, and plan to color metallic blue. other than that, bone stock

This is the dealer order sheet for 1980 .....79 was similar

The Chevy Sport option was a COPO order for 76/77

It then became RPO Z77 for 78-81 .....last year was 81

GMC had the Street Coupe also under RPO Z77 from78-81

What size tires have you got going on your red sport? I've got a 79 Chyenne SWB and I'm lookin' at new tires and your truck look just right. It's stock hight, right? Thanks!

The blue stepside is not mine;it was for sale in Edmonton two years ago but by the time I saw the ad it was sold ...I have been trying to find it since ....

The GM dealer south of Red Deer has a blue fleetside he restored;purchased from the original owner and has the factory buckets ....but truck is not for sale.

Sports turn up for sale on kijiji and ebay every couple of months ....most are restoration projects or have been repainted in incorrect colors.

Re: How many 1979 Chevy Sports produced

I've been on a hunt of a sport like the blue stepside except the one I'm looking for is a 4x4. I had bought a 81 2wd in 83 because I was tired of looking for a nice truck and settled for the 81. A week later the blue 80 sport showed up at our local dealer by the time I got there my neighbor had bought it. He kept it for several years and traded it in for a new 90 something truck. It was too late when I found out. I thought I had seen it one time in a factory parking lot that I was driving by. The same neighbors brother got a new 2wd chevy sport for graduation in 1979.

They are 275 x 60 x 15 Radial TAs

The stock tires were LR60 x 15 and that size is as close to original as they make.

Stock suspension in the 79 ....my 80 and 81 have 2/4 drop

Re: How many 1979 Chevy Sports produced

Hey Alex, I found 4 "old style" BFG Radial T/A's LR60-15 that would've been on these trucks new, huh? Unfortunately they are not NOS. They would be good on some factory optional rims for a carshow, but not for driving on.

Cool, thanks. I'm tire shopping and I think I'm going with 255/70s on my '79. Lookin' good.

Oh man... That is a beautiful truck. I love the colours.

Hey 80Streetcoupe... Do you have an 80's Street Coupe in Regina? I make it there every couple months and would love to see yours and discuss the "Street Coupe" with you. And Maybe explain my crazy project

Re: How many 1979 Chevy Sports produced

Maybe someone out there would have more pics of the GMC "street coupe" . I'm looking for the exact colour options and where the decals are positioned as well as colours of the decals.

Since you guys are talking about Chevy Sports and tires I thought I would
post a picture of my never used spare from my 1977 Chevy Sport. I also talked to George a couple of weeks ago and he could not help me with the total number of 1977 Chevy Sports as most of them where made in the US.
Never thought to ask him how many where made in Canada; next time I will ask him. Larry:chevy:

Those were great rims too, especially when using a set of trim rings on them. We used to call them farmer mags.

Yes guys those are the PA6 styled wheels. That general scrambler tire is correct for the sport. Here is the invoice on a 78 sport I bought a while ago. It shows that tire size for the sport.
