Big Block on the engine stand
 

Has anyone fired a engine on their engine stand before installing it. If you have what are some of the do’s and don’ts on performing this. Thanks

big block is a lot for reg stands even rated for them .

i would do a engine run stand my self .

I wouldnt...engine stands are somewhat top heavy anyway...wouldn't take much to flip it...

wow he is crazy doing that on a 3 wheel stand . :crazy:

side note : all my engine stands get the bolt together joints welded up solid . makes a huge improvement in them . and i do the wide spread 2 wheel front . or the WIDE spread 2 leg 1 wheel per leg .

This thread reminded me of seeing a small block running on a 4 wheel stand in a shop awhile back. Guy had an adapter for connecting a garden hose into the water pump inlet. He had a hose valve on the water outlet on the intake manifold. He had a temp. gauge screwed into the manifold. He turned on the hose & started the engine and regulated the temperature with the valve by adjusting how much water he let flow through the engine. I thought it was nice to be able to run an engine without the belts/fan/radiator. This guy assembled and installed engines out of his home shop and liked to make running adjustments & check for leaks before installation.

I have to laugh, on "youtube" they start engines on the ground, figured someone had done this on this forum.

BTW, the engine stand has four wheels and I do have a engine test stand to use. Crazy you say...LOL!!!!

Thats cool, the test stand I built uses the bellhousing and its on wheels or solid.

Figured there are several ways people have broke in their engines and sold engines by firing them up using all different ways from backyarders to dyno pullers.

I have. Just not on one of those stands...

I have found the ability to run the motor before installation in the chassis to be amazingly valuable and a big time saver.

I bought this one from a guy on Craig's List awhile back. Couldn't pass on it for $200. Alum. radiator, bellhousing, tach., oil pressure & temp. gauge, MSD box & coil. I robbed the temp. gauge for the Nova. Not shop space friendly(BIG) but you can rev an engine all you want on it.

That was a deal at 200 bucks, cant build it for that.

I fired up the big block this weekend. It saves a lot of time over the fender type of work plus making sure there are no leaks, timing, valves, are all set to where they need to be. Now all I have to do is drop it in the vehicle and go.

I'm building an engine run stand for my Olds 455. It's 36"x34 with wheels. There's no way I'd fire it up on the engine stand. I have a 4 wheeled stand and I know it would tip over.

I didnt say I fired it up on the engine stand. I fired it up so I can make sure I can just install it in the blazer frame and it will be ready to go.

The reason for the post was to get "feed back on ideas" of why would anyone fire up an engine prior to installation, but I got the obvious replies. I will be more careful of what I post in the future on this forum. It appears lots of people here are more subject to look at the negatives than the positives.... common sense tells me not to fire it up on a engine stand but again I will watch what the heck I post in this forum. Thanks for all the great replies, I learned what I needed to know.

Not just in the forums, but anywhere in general you gotta watch what ya say.
