AMBULANCE

THANKS! TOO BAD I'VE GOTTA LET IT GO. ONE OF THESE DAYS WHEN I'M RICH...................WELL, YOU KNOW.

grebus1 10-22-2003 05:41 PM

Very nice! Do you know anything about the history of this ambulance, such as who the conversion company was and where the ambulance was in service? Also, is all the upholstery original and where did they relocate the spare tire? I have an obsessive interest in these Suburban ambulances, so any info you can provide is great!

Canadian694x4 10-22-2003 11:08 PM

that is one clean lookin' Saweet truck!

toms68cst 10-23-2003 09:04 PM

Man I'd love to have that one. (But I have no $$$):whine:

Where did it come from?? Looks like it has North Dakota plates on it in the pictures.

How many ticks on the odometer?

It looks like it's ready to run on an emergency.

DARRIN 10-24-2003 10:32 AM

IT WAS IN SERVICE IN MOHALL,N.D. FOR LOCAL EMERGENCIES FROM 1970 TO 1993. I BOUGHT IT WITH 43,000 ORIGINAL MILES ON IT. NOW IT'S GOT 54,000. IT'S ALL ORIGINAL, BUT I HAD TO PUT SOME USED HEADS ON IT BECAUSE THE OLD ONES WERE MADE FOR LEADED GAS, AND THUS ROASTED OUT SIX OF THE VALVE SEATS. SLAPPED ON THE (FREE) USED HEADS THAT A BUDDY GAVE ME, FIRED IT UP....AND DROVE IT EVERY DAY SINCE.
EVERYTHING YOU SEE IS HOW IT WAS IN 1970 WHEN IT WAS NEW, BUT THE BEACON ISN'T PICTURED. I KEEP IT STOWED IN THE BACK SO I WON'T GET STOLEN OR SOMETHING ( I AM IN L.A.)
I AM FROM L.A., BUT I LIVED IN BOTTINEAU, N.D. WHEN I BOUGHT IT ABOUT TWO YEARS AGO. MY FATHER LIVES THERE....HE IS ILL, AND I NEED TO MOVE BACK THERE. GOTTA GET A U-HAUL AND SPLIT PRETTY SOON, THAT'S WHY I'VE GOT TO SELL IT. I'VE AN OLD DATSUN IN N.D. I CAN BEAT ON, AND THE WEATHER AND ROADS THERE CAN WORK THEIR MAGIC ALL THEY WANT ON THE DATSUN............IT WOULD BE A CARDINAL SIN TO PARK THAT BABY OUTSIDE IN N.D., AND THE GARAGE THERE IS TAKEN UP BY MY OTHER PROJECT.........A '55 DeSoto FIREFLITE SPORTSMAN COUPE WITH ABOUT 67,000 ORIGINAL MILES. IT WAS FEATURED IN COLLECTOR CARS MAGAZINE ABOUT TEN YEARS AGO.......(IT'S THE RARE ONE WITH THE 291 HEMI AND THE FOUR BARREL CARB) I GUESS THEY ONLY MADE THAT ENGINE ONE YEAR, AND THE "FIREDOME" PACKAGE HAD THE 4-BARREL. I ESTIMATE THERE ARE ONLY MAYBE 25 OF THEM LEFT IN THE U.S. TOO MANY PROJECTS, TOO SMALL OF A BUDGET, TOO LITTLE TIME,..............WELL YOU KNOW WHAT I MEAN! THANKS FOR ASKING ABOUT THE OLD JAMBULANCE!

toms68cst 10-26-2003 09:26 PM

Dang that thing's sweet. Welcome back to ND Darrin if you make it. Just take your Ambulance with you when you come!

I ran accross another 71-72 Burb ambulance in Bottineau? (or in the area) about a year and a half ago. It too looked to be in really nice shape.

DARRIN 10-27-2003 11:24 AM

old ambulance

Unfortunately I am selling it. I wish I had the money to keep it, but it's heartbreaking to drive it everyday (it's my only car out here) adding to the mileage, and not having the $$$ to fix things, or at least keep it the way it was when it was new. It's going to a good home to someone who has the money, collects hearses, and has enough connections and the ways and means to do it right. Thanks for the welcome back to N.D...........I can't wait to get back. Someday I'll friggin' finish what I started.........but right now it just isn't possible. So...........I'll go beat my '74 Datsun to death in N.D. (Can you think of a better fate for a Japanese car?)
I heard a rumour that there was two of these ambulances. I searched high and low when I was there, and I was told there wasn't another one around there. You probably saw mine. I did see what looked like a '72 'burb ambulance in Bottineau around the time of the Devil's Run, but it was painted metallic blue and had a really ugly high-top. There was a romour that there was two like mine, but the other one was wrecked many, many years ago. I've never been able to prove if the "twin brother" is or ever was around, though.

Darrin: Do you still have this ambulance available? I'm looking for a hightop Suburban ambulance for first response purposes. Picture link didn't work. I had a '70 hightop Suburban ambulance stolen in 1989 which has never been seen again.

Thanks for the reply, Chris. I had no idea this listing was soooo old! There have been some Suburban ambulances popping up here and there, and as I note in my post, I'm seriouslly looking for one to use as a First Responder. This listing popped up from my Google search. Thanks again.
