Original 3 speed disassembly

I need help. '60 Apache. Original 3 speed trans leaking between main case and tail shaft piece. Bought a new gasket set. Removed the side cover that has the linkage levers, removed the four bolts on the tailshaft. Tailshaft comes back about 4 inches then a large gear that wont go through the hole stops it. Any ideas? I was thinking maybe the tailshaft itself would stay with the trans and the outer casing would come off but apparently not. By peeking in the side cover looks like one gear has a chip on the edge too...

It's amazing what you can find on Youtube these days.

Re: Original 3 speed disassembly

Ugh. Looks like nobody around here has any experience tearing these old 3 speeds down and trying to get them back together again. Might have to forge ahead on my own. Inside of the original '60 trans is kinda rough, got some gears with chipped edges and the main gear for some reason will not side on the "clutch" as they call it in the books. By the time I did finally get it apart (the tail and main shaft does not simply just slide out as everybody shows at least not for me) one of the tiny roller needles had ran off. Dug a 55-57 Chev passenger 3 speed out of my stash and going to see if I can make one out of two. The 55-57 3 speed does not have the threaded bottom two mounting holes and it appears the shifter forks are different and point the wrong way. I'm probably the only one on here to ever mess with an original 3 speed...

And if anybody has an original 3 speed I might be in the market especially if you are in my neck of the woods...

I have one out of a '65 that you can have. If you can get it there.

I've done a bunch back when I owned a 57 Chevy car back in high school. They would last just about a month. But that was 40 yrs ago!
But Seems like I remember snap ring inside the extension housing you had to expand to get it loose from the rear mainshaft brg.
Oh my son did a couple also, they didn't last any longer for him in his '64 pickup than they did for me in my car. I have a 1962 motors manual down in the shop though if you need particulars from it just ask!

Be careful if using parts from another transmission. Eons ago I remember helping a guy and found that 2 gears that looked the same had teeth cut at a slightly different angle.
