Checking Gen-1 V-8 Engine Condition
 

I found a couple old threads...

I want to make sure I'm checking everything to verify my 283's Engine condition. It was supposedly rebuilt around 20 thousand miles ago.

It runs very nice, it holds good oil pressure, doesn't smoke, and doesn't overheat. I don't hear any ticking or knocking.

From my research I've learned that I need to do a compression test, and leak-down test.
I also want to pull the valve covers and check lifter lift - making sure the intakes all have the same lift, as well as the exhaust lifters all having the same lift. Look over my spark plugs for lean or rich condition.


What else should I check or test to assess my engines' condition?

if its got good oil pressure and there no oil in the water or vice versa and compression checks....and cam lift checks...look at plugs....it should be good...looking under valve covers and oil pan for crud tells a lot as well

Look at the condition of the freeze plugs. I realize they can't tell you about the milage, but the cheap zinc plated looking ones rot out over time and that can definitely tell you about age. Brass ones, not so much.
