toolboxes or other storage containers in your trucks
Howdy folks.
I was just wondering what types of things ya'll use or have used in the back of your 60-66 trucks for tool boxes or other storage containers. Things you bought, built or converted... I'm interested in them all. -W |
Re: toolboxes or other storage containers in your trucks
I've seen a couple of trucks in my area with customized early auto trunks (20s-30s era). There are a few guys with larger budget rigs running really nice Snap-on and Mac top chests in the bed.

Re: toolboxes or other storage containers in your trucks
For about 10 years I ran a Gaylord hard cover, allowing use of a variety of different tool boxes depending on what I was doing. In the early days my commute was almost 200 miles a week, so I carried enough tools to rebuild an engine. I strapped these to the forward end of the bed. When the commute dropped to about 12 miles a week, I reduced the load to a simple rubber box about the size of a shoe box with a hinged lid and handle. It carried enough essentials to get me out of trouble. Now that the truck and I are both retired, it doesn't travel far from home so the bed is completely empty. I only carry a can of inflata-spare in the glovebox and a AAA card just in case.
Another note - I did once have a 1983 Chevy fleetside longbed as our daily car, and installed one of those poly/rubber tool boxes that go across the front of the bed rails. What a waste of money. Within a year it sagged so bad I couldn't get either lid open without adding steel reinforcement along the bottom. If you have interest in that style of box, make sure to buy a steel or aluminum model. |

I've seen some army surplus boxes converted for storage. Generally heavy duty and pretty cool lookin' IMO.

Here is my box. It is 1/8" aluminum reinforced and makes a very good seat in the back of the truck. It holds all kinds of tools, tire chains, floor jack, air pump, rigging gear etc.
It is a HIGHWAY PRODUCTS 18 wheeler box, very heavy duty. TR |

Re: toolboxes or other storage containers in your trucks
entertained the thought of a 50s metal coca cola cooler that belonged to my grand father but was afraid of a snatch and grab so dismissed that thought they go for about $300.00 now in good shape

Re: toolboxes or other storage containers in your trucks
$50 plastic tote at Walmart....I can stand on it too and it supports my weight. My buddy kept one in his truck and used it as a cooler for tailgating.

Years ago, I traded a flimsy mini-truck cross-bed toolbox for this beaut. Vintage heavy-duty and galvanized inside and out. I've never seen another like it before or since.

I have an ammo crate in mine with some spare air ride stuff, a cheap tool set and some cleaning supplies. The cooler next to it is actually my battery box.

Deryl - I've seen a few under the hood ones here and there... but I think they were a aftermarket deal.
