67-72 Factory Assembly manual
 

I have one and i think they manual is awesome. One very big problem, it doesn't have a table of contents or index. And with this being such a detailed book it makes it very hard to use. Does any one know where i could get a table of contents or an index to it?

I don't even see how you could do an index. Most of the pages have the detail information at the bottom of the page whited out, including the page number, page title and assembly number information.

I am sure there must have been some reason for doing this, but it does make it very hard to find what you are looking for. I love the book also, but many times you just have to flip thru the pages looking at the pictures until you find what you are looking for.

Great resource, but not efficient. I use it in the "when all else fails, read the manual" methodology.

Best suggestion I have is to use some of the 3M Post-It tabs. They come in colors and you can write on them w/o any problems. They attach easily and can be removed if you don't want to have that tab on a specific page, anymore.

I know it ain't an index, but it's a help to know where something is when you pick up the book. Best I can tell, the pages have been placed in order in accordance with the time they were originally published. For me, the 1969 data starts with the Blazer pages, which detailed what was new and what changed. Having the ability to visualize your truck as you look at the pages, will be of benefit.

do any of you have the chassis service manual? ive been thinking of picking one up. havent heard anybody say much about it.

I bought the "Red Book" quite a few months ago and find it difficult at best to use.

It as a lot of valuable info, but it sure takes time to find what you need.

I use it as a last resort or light reading before I go to sleep.

I just got my assembly manual tonight, and the first thing I noticed was there was no index.

I'm going to start an excel spreadsheet of what is on each page. I figure I'll just start numbering the front of the book from 1 to whatever.

Hopefully I can post an spreadsheet on here so we can all use it (and maybe someone can help add to it)

"Factory Assembly Manual" is really a fiction aimed at the post-vintage aftermarket restoration crowd -- US --you guys and me.
Yes it is sort of an assembly manual, but really the book is a compilation of GM's notes to dealer service centers on Retail Purchase Options [RPO]installation. Probably they were faxed out from Detroit, back in the day. [Maybe mailed out to Mayberry.] The randomness is testimony to the fact that there was never any intent by the original document producer, the Manufacturer, for there to be any such compilation. Also original copies of RPO guidelines had OEM part numbers in 7 digit format. The empty spaces in the " Factory Assembly Manual" loom out like empty caption balloons in an Orphan Annie comic. At any rate there are no part numbers listed in the Red book now.
Maybe there were copyright issues? I'd bet some critical notes on installations were also didacted. Could be a lot of these dealer shop guys were trained in Michigan, and all spoke in a code that is lost to us non-employee enthusiasts. I wonder if you heat some of the pages with a candle, some of the lemon juice instructions come into view, however briefly. JK.
The Chevrolet Truck Chassis and Service Manual and the ... Overhaul manual are both genuine documents, and worth owning by the serious owner operator.

I use it like this.......Assembly Manual, Assembly Manual, reveal onto me, the page number and part number that I must Seeeeee!!!

I'm thinking there may be another verse, as it's still not working.:crazy:

Mine came with a magik 8 ball, it knows all and tells all! Agreed, there is no rhyme or reason to the way that manual is set up, jumps around year to year, its a helpful product, but I still like the exploded views in the LMC catalog and the wording in the good ole Chiltons, between the 3, this dumb ole counrty boy had a 71 tore to 3000 pieces and got it all back together, (well kinda)

I hand numbered all of the pages. I then made a sheet with all of the Service Manual categories on it, then made an ilist under each category of each page with what was on that page.
An example: (made up page numbers used here for example)
Air Conditioning p.37-48, 119-154
Brakes - p.79-84, 164-170, etc.
This helped me alot

Factory service manual that was used in a Dealer shop. This one is complete with handwritten notes by the mechanic who used it when the trucks were new.
I try to buy the factory manual for every rig I own as I find they have the detailed info that we need to work on the vehicles and do the work right the first time.

I don't like the Factory Assembly Manual. Way too much missing and the book is just too big. I feel like I totally wasted money on the dang thing. And that was just to purchase it. When you add in the time spent thumbing through the pages without really getting an answer, it just adds up.

I saw a guy on Ebay a few months ago who was trying to sell what he said was the FAM for each year. The sales add said he was the guy who put the current FAM together from the pages he was selling. The add also said there were many many more pages but, when he put the FAM together, he only selected what he thought were the most essntial pages. What he was selling was not book format. It was just pages. It looked real interesting until I saw his BuyItNow price, $18,000. If someone were willing to make 6 books for each year and provide all the pages, they could probably make a few bucks, but not at a starting price of $18,000. I guess the guy plans on dying with the information. Probably be like an Egyptian and have it put in his pyramid.
