Faux paint step by step
 

A couple people asked me to show them how I was reproducing the patina on my truck... I figured this was the better forum to put it in... There are some examples on this page of my build thread http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...=702899&page=7

Keep in mind, so far I am only doing small areas. But will do a couple new doors and a hood later on... I will start off with a epoxy primed part for "actual" rust protection...

Pic 1, the colors I am using. All Krylon.

Pic 2, a primed card, using the same color primmer on the truck.

Pic 3, template and color for a rust spot, say a body line.

Pic 4, the rust spot

Pic 5, another color and a smaller slit to add some depth to the rust spot.

I ended up spraying some more dark gray primer on the card (to "hide" some of the red) to match other areas of the truck. Every panel is different.

I already used some of these techniques in the first pic. I patched in the fuel filler location and spray bombed it... That rusty looking spot is the body line of the cab corner... Cheers!

Here is a spot in the roof where I welded a hole shut. I intentionally sanded a line in it and left a slight low spot in it. I used the dark gray primer and a another color that matched the rust... Is it spotless? No but it will blend in once its cleared...

That's pretty cool to see the before and after shots of the repairs.

Just curious, how exactly do you "drizzle" rattle can paints?

Stuck the right size piece of copper wire in the end of the nozzle...Play with different sizes

This is pretty impressive. I'd like to see more. Maybe with the larger sections you mention. I've got some rocker/door bottom/fender sections that will need blending on my '65 over the winter. Was planning to have a buddy spray it with a gun and try to get right but these techniques might just work better, if i can get my colors right (hugger orange over light green with a ton of surface rust).

I agree...looks great....I've seen so many fake patinas that just look awful...yours is one of the best fake jobs I've seen....you should do a howto video...
