Well I have finally decided after putting it off for many years to start getting my 64 swb closer to being road worthy again. Dad bought this truck new, traded it to my uncle in the 80s (for some hay and cash I think), then I did some swapping with my uncle to get it back (i think i swapped him a cookstove and fridge lol)

Plans are to change the suspension over to 5 lug from early 80s truck, do a static drop (probably 3/5 to start with), possibly get a 283 and rebuild it. Still debating which way to go with drivetrain but I have lots of time before that comes to pass anyway. I might keep the 3 speed but make it floor shifter.....

Would like to relocate the gas tank, simple but comfortable interior. Truck still has factory AM radio which I might leave and put XM receiver in glovebox. Of course being in Texas it will need some vintage air to keep it cool.

This is what it looked like after I acquired it from my uncle probably 10 yrs ago.....yes i put stuff off lol. How about those greenwalls? :metal:

Paint will either be factory green or a really dark blue. Will start a build thread soon :ito:

I get the patina thing and now wish I had left my truck that way 27 years ago. Welcome and good luck on your project.

Patina might work in the desert but not here in the Northwest....we call it moss and decay...

Lets just say mine is a little bit behind the rest of these guys. It sat in the woods for about 10 years before I pulled it out for this pic. I have done a few things such as remove the engine and trans but thats about it lol.

Neat thing about the truck is the fact that my dad bought it new in 64 and he traded it to my uncle(for 75 bales of hay if I recall correctly ) for a while before i got it back from him. It isnt much to look at but it doesnt cost me anything to sit there until it gets its time of restoring. Too many projects=bad idea.

That truck has a sick patina on it. Every time I look at my truck I wish it still had original paint like that.

Patina is like a piece of history. Not "Rust" but just the surface wear and paint fade you'd get from a really old classic like this.

He's in Texas too. He can pick either and he'll be fine.

Yep, exactly. Patina shows the trucks history. I love old trucks that aren't afraid to hide their dints and dings, it lets everyone know where that machine has been, and that it is a survivor.

if you have the money to paint it, paint it, if you dont, dont. As long as you dont paint it flat black, thats my crappy opinion worth what it cost.

looks like a cherry truck to start with, great project coming I am sure.

x2, i remembered seeing it in that thread as well...glad to see it's finally getting some attention...i agree with leaving the original paint if possible....but to each his own, and i'm sure you'll treat it right no matter what...oh, and i love trucks such as this with the family history...good luck, & keep us updated as you make progress

Man time flies doesnt it? 2004 makes me seem like a bit of a slacker haha. I have thought about keeping the patina and probably will for a while anyway....get it rolling and dependable first off. I am about to "thin the herd" some so I can get these projects on the road....64 el camino may be gone in a week, 72 trazer is being traded to a neighbor tomorrow :)

The one in the background belonged to my uncle as well. He had several long bed stepsides as well as a flat/tilt bed with a 305 v6 but not sure where they ended up. As i get thru the parts swapping i will have a few odds and ends to sell from a 66 short fleet i bought. It is a big back window but someone cut the corners out for speakers :waah: I prefer the small window myself....lets less of that Texas sun in :lol:

I am hoping to get the frame blasted and sprayed in the next few weeks....may look into powder coating it instead. My goal is to have a decent rolling chassis by end of summer and start installing the body with new mounts and decide which way to go on the engine. Thought i had a good lead on a decent 283 but guy decided to keep it for now. May keep the original inline and have it rebuilt:metal:
