1970 Chevy P10 Stepvan....aka "Tiny"

Hey guys,

Thought I would share my new project with the forum. I picked up this all aluminum 1970 p10 this weekend. It runs and drives and has no rot. Does have the usual dents and dings, nothing a hammer and dolly and some time wont straighten out. It has a 250 with a 3 speed floor shift. Plans are to keep the inline 6 and switch to a modern tranny. Drop it 4 and 6 for now...maybe bag it in the future. Has drum brakes all the way around so that will definetly have to be swapped to disk. Has 6 lug setup now but I will swap to 5 when the brakes are done. I currently have 2 step vans in my business fleet so I am familiar with mill supply parts house. If any of you stepvan guys know of anywhere else that I can get parts I would appreciate any leads. Thanks for looking and let the fun begin. I will get some more pics and vids up once I start getting into it.

It is a little hard to understand how small this thing is. I parked one of my Fedex trucks in front of it to get a better picture. This is the smallest fedex truck in my fleet. Its a p700, 11 feet tall and 24 feet long. The new toy is only 7 1/2 feet tall and 11 feet long. It needs new tires and I just happen to have a brand new set. I think once I get them on it will sit another 2 inches lower in the front and 4 in the back. It currently has huge snow tires on the rear.

Got it up on the lift today to swap out the tires. Broke some studs and had to replace some lugs. I will try to get some more pics tomorrow. This unfortunatly will be a slow build. I will be using it as a tool truck as I get it ready for a complete resto. This thread will be a motivation tool to keep progress moving forward. Not sure if you guys know this, other than the chassis being shorter. This stepvan has the exact same suspension setup as a c10. Its bascially a shortened c10, so parts for the chassis, suspension, steering, brakes, etc are stock c10 parts. Sure makes replacing parts easy.

Any updates on Tiny?

I've been looking into P10's and yours keeps popping up everywhere. Very nice little van. I found a local guy selling one but his looks slightly longer, at around 14'.

Hey Couch,
no real updates. Im have been driving it around town as is. Its a blast to cruise in. People stop and talk to me about it every time I take it out. Little kids love getting in it. It really is a fun vehicle to drive and own. I have big plans for it once I somewhere to work on it. Its about 6 inches to tall to fit in my house garage. The 14 footers are actually p20's. I havent seen any p20's with the stub nose. That would be pretty cool. Are you looking for a p10. I have a few leads on some if your interested.

Re: 1970 Chevy P10 Stepvan....aka "Tiny"

Yes, I'm interested in a P10 specifically. The 14' dimension was overall length. WB looks to be 102"

This is the one I've been looking at...

Ive always thought those were kinda cool. There was one for sale here on the board many years ago. I talked with the guy about it .... sooo close, just couldn't pull the trigger lol

If I remember they are basically the same as the pick ups underneath.

couch,

is that p10 aluminum or steel. I havent seen that one out there yet. Let me know if it works out. These are basically c10's other than the body. I have a 68 stepside and they are identical except for the body mounts. Parts are easy to come by.

Re: 1970 Chevy P10 Stepvan....aka "Tiny"

It looks to be a steel body due to the rust. I haven't seen it in person yet. Received some dimensions from the owner though.

Overall length is 166", 102" wheelbase and 64" height inside the box.

Got "tiny" out on the road last night....uh....freakin awesome. I drove it about 10 miles to dinner. Must have had 10 people wave and give the thumbs up on the ride there. People get the biggest kick out of this thing. Love seeing them smile and talk about how it. Im starting to order parts, hoping to pull the body off the frame this winter. Gonna do it right with Porterbuilt air ride suspension, sometime in the spring. Gonna keep a detailed build thread, videos included. Cant wait to get into this project!!

72p10,

Very nice looking, dig the chrome. Not much going on with mine right now. Im finishing my dad's 1954 chevy pickup. Going to paint in a few weeks. I just started ordering parts for mine. What kind of motor/tranny are you running. Im seriously considering a LS. Have some concern with the DS valve cover sitting to high causing me to re engineer the floor section where the gas and brake pedals are. Lots of work im not sure I want to get into. The 250 i have in there now runs like a champ but gonna freshen it up if I keep it. Gonna put a 700R4 behind. Do you build yours or purchase it like that??

Re: 1970 Chevy P10 Stepvan....aka "Tiny"

My van has a I6 250. All stock except distributor I upgraded to hei. At some point someone converted the 3 on the tree to auto. I believe its a 350 trans. It moves real nice w/ this motor, & I think putting an 8cyl. would be a nightmare. (No space)
It had been sitting in a warehouse for years. I cleaned it up a lot, but its mostly an unmolested original. I lowered it 6in w/ CPP lowered springs & shocks. It rides surprisingly nice & cruises on the highway sweet.

72p10....Im hoping the I6/700r4 will be enough to get me down the road...is your auto a column shift or floor shift?? Would like to make mine a column shift but without stock shifting linkage that might be tough....can you post a pic of you shifter if on the floor..interested in seeing where its at in relation to the seat. Thanks b

My p10 was original 3 on the column. (I wish it still was, I wouldn't have changed it.) The po converted the linkage to shift the auto trans. It works fine but has no lock out, or safety switch. I plan on replacing the column w/ a auto column. If yours is floor shift you can buy an auto floor shift from lokar, should be pretty easy to install. I removed the stock shift handle & modefied an old hurst I had laying around.
