engine build questions?
 

the motor that im going to be building for my 68 long bed. the truck has a th400 and 3.73 posi. im going to be switching to a 700r4 within a year tho. im really wanting 400 hp and a motor that i can drive everyday. ive asked a ton of questions about this so far and thanks for all the help this far.

heres what i have decided on
400 sbc .030 over
stock rod lenght
flat top pistons with 4 1cc relief valves
cam Dur @ .050 214/214 Lift .442/.442
intake performer EPS
Heads Edelbrock 64 cc E-Street
Roller rockers
650 Cfm Holley DP

so i have three questions
1. does this motor sound like it will acheive what i want from it?
2. would i get better power/economy from a set of GMPP Vortec heads
3. am i wasting my time using the stock lenght rods?

Looks like a fun combo. I run a 406 myself.
A sbc with 4.155 bore, 3.75 stroke, 64cc head chamber, 4.1cc flat top pistons, and I am guessing .020 deck hight would have around 11.2 static compression. You will need a much larger cam, or larger cc heads.

I think you're going to have too much compression with that combo to run on pump gas. I would go with a piston with a small dish, and a bit bigger cam. A 406 can utilize a fairly good sized cam. With that small cam you're leaving a good bit of power on the table.

how big would i be able to go without losing ability to double as a daily driver?

I have used this cam in a 406 with stock dished pistons, Vortec heads, and the typical intake, carb, ignition, and made very respectable power, and it could have easily been a DD.

I built a 406 for my blazer years ago. It has an Isky 270 mega cam. The duration at .050 is 221. With this cam, 10.0 compression, pocket ported 487 heads, and a performer intake, it had awsome low end torque, and was pretty much all over with after 5000 rpm. Perfect for a mild daily driver type application. As general rule, the cam usage descriptions are based on a 350. Pick the rpm and usage you need, and go one size bigger for the 400.
For your 400hp goal, I think you'll need more cam than you have picked.
I wouldn't worry too much about the rods in such a mild application.

im going to be watching this. i have a 400 stock bore about to go in my 84 in a few weeks. maybe going to a 406 alum heads in a year or so.

but dont you think a 650cfm carb is to small? for what your looking for

honestly i jus want dependability! i said 400hp before but if i could get between 350 and 400 i would be pumped but would settle for less as long as its still a strong motor! I plan to drive this truck to death and then rebuild it again lol! ive decided on the 70cc combustion chamber Estreet heads to give me a better compression ratio for pump gas and seriously considering the cam Captainfab suggested
