spot welds
If you dont know where the spot welds are - do what - just drill and drill and drill till it pops i guess ? This is the column/brake support behind cluster

Re: spot welds
Since the welds are indented slightly, sand the area a bit and they should show themselves.

Re: spot welds
Ill give that a go --- I could find the side ones easy as I could feel them ..... but not these ones :)

Re: spot welds
that support is also spot welded to the underside of the cowl and the firewall. really nice place to get to with a drill too. don't ask me how I know.
I use the "sand it first" trick and also an old 1" wide putty knife that is sharpened on the edge. I use a hammer to get the knife between the 2 pieces of steel that are spot welded and then hammer it along until it stops when butted up against a spot weld. kinda hard to do in this scenario though because of access. maybe a small pry bar? |
Re: spot welds
Yeah
Really makes me wonder if there wasnt a better way to keep it in place and drill and fab something in place for the brake pedal and booster support .... guessing not though as most seem to do it this way |

This is what I did some years ago before they had a unit to replace it with

Re: spot welds
Neat - did you do in the dash or remove.
Would be cool if someone made a kit to do in dash. Mark and drill here. Weld here. Cut here. :) |
Re: spot welds
Study this "Basics of Basics" for spot weld removal, it has all the answers to every question you may have and many you haven't thought of. http://www.hotrodders.com/forum/basi...ls-222549.html

Just trace the opening onto cardboard , cut out the ends and drill a hole where you want the pedal to swing. Grab a pedal assembly from the recyclers and your good to go |
Re: spot welds
That seems like the better way to go :)
I'm almost fully pulled this one out though now .... so might as well continue ...... |
Re: spot welds
Take a look at the spot weld drill bits at Harbor Freight. Not the best but they are cheap.
With care you can probably drill 50 or so spot welds loose before they die. For the money, that's not too bad. |
Re: spot welds
What Roger said. Those HF gizmos are cheap and work pretty good.

Re: spot welds
Well. A few more weeks and not much done. Got to get moving.
Got it out fairly easy in the end. A little bit of spot weld but mainly just prying. Put the S10 bracket in place - but dont like either the brake pedal position, height or the amount of cutting Id need to do to make it half decent. http://imgur.com/5RX95Yr http://imgur.com/5RX95Yr http://imgur.com/lensciM http://imgur.com/lensciM So ...... Think IM just going to got with the CPP kit. 5559FMB. http://www.classicperform.com/Instru...structions.pdf https://www.summitracing.com/parts/clp-5559fmb Hate when I spend time and money on a solution that doesnt work ...... but think better to just poney up now and get completed. |
