56 cab on its back
 

After I get my cab off can I lay it on its back? Back window down. It would make my job of cleaning it up easier. I just don’t damage the cab. Thanks

I plan on doing this too, I am going to make a cart out of 2/4's or 2/6's with a hinging mechanism to tilt it back. It will have wheels on it so I can put it up on the tow truck and then roll it off at the sand blasters so they can blast the floor underside and top and the firewall inside and out.

I've seen guys lay them over on an old mattress or maybe the cushions off an old couch. A couple large sheets of cardboard might be enough padding or maybe a couple of those HF furniture pads. Something to keep it from going directly on a hard surface.

Ive seen guys use old futon mattresses or moving blinks and couch cushions.

I had built a body rotissory for my builds. Just to make it easy to access all the panels easily.

some thick foam or an old mattress will probably work fine. there are a couple of high spots, one on each side at the outboard edges, that will hi the floor first so place thicker padding there. if you make a table, like roger55 did, you will likely want to make the table narrower than those high spots. if you look at roger's you can see that is how he did his. it will sit on that depressed area. a large surface area will give the best results because less pounds per square inch.

Damn that looks like fun..... Just out of curiosity, how many guys does it take to manhandle a stripped cab without getting hurt? I always assumed that the bed comes off first, then you lift the cab a few inches, slip some timbers underneath and walk it to the rear of the truck to clear the frame.

This is exactly what I want to do 6 months after writing the final college tuition check for the kids! Been a long time coming, but I see light at the end of the tunnel! -Steve

i rolled my cab on the back and front end a few times when working on the cab
makes it a lot easier to weld up floor supports and finish welding floor patches

Roger,

Pretty impressive that a single 2x took the load of the cab. Was it a very deep 2x, like a 2x12? Or maybe a prefabricated truss?

It's a 2X6. The cab is totally empty. Doesn't really weigh that much.
The eyebolt goes up into the attic and goes though another 2X6 placed across the top of two 2X6 joists. Used a big washer under the eyebolt nut. Believe me, it's way more than stout enough. I'm sure it would lift double that weight without a problem.

agreed^^^^ cab doesn't weigh much...I used a 2x4 when I pulled my AD cab yrs ago...just like Roger did...but outdoors..

I lust rolled mine (51 cab) on its back in the grass. No damage that I could see!
