LS Fuel tank/ electric fuel pump ideas/ input needed
 

I'm about to embark on my latest project, swapping an LS1 onto a 72 swb chassis, then installing a 70 cab and clip. I am trying line out the major issues, one of which being the fuel system. Instead of going the "cubic dollar" route, I am trying to keep it low buck. I have a fuel tank out of an 82 Suburban I parted years ago. It seem that it is similar in width to the Blazer tank I used in another 72, but deeper. My thoughts are using a sending unit out of an 87-91 (that was originally equipped with an electric fuel pump) and instead of the tbi pump, I would use a pump from a newer vehicle, perhaps the donor 02 Trans Am, or newer LS equipped pickup.

Thoughts?

Just use an EP381 pump. It will fit right in the 87-91 sender.

I have a 93 Suburban tank in my 71 and swapped out the pump for a LS pump when I did the motor swap from the TPI motor. Works great. Mine is 42 gallon and up inside the bed under my cover.
People flip out when they see me pumping gas but I can get right at 700 miles on a tank of gas.
I still have plenty of room inside the bed also.:chevy:

I’m going the Jeep Wrangler tank. The suburban tank didn’t fit between the crossmembers like I’d like. I would either have to cut the crossmembers or drop the tank down low. I didn’t want to do either.

I'm currently using a 1992 S10 Blazer 20 gallon tank along with an EP381 fuel pump and it works great. Also used a 1987 Chevy van tank before along with the EP381 pump but it hung a little lower than I wanted. Both these tanks are from throttle body vehicles so they have built in pans to prevent fuel starvation and the sending units easily accommodate the upgraded pump required to run LS applications.

I figured out that the suburban tank is too big. It won't fit in between the cross members. I used a 72 blazer gas tank in the truck in my profile pic, but it was carbed. The 72 blazer tank is rectangular when viewed from above, and the suburban tank I have is square. It might work in a lwb, but mine is a swb. I contemplated using a blazer tank again, but IIRC, the newer sending unit needed for the factory style electric fuel pump wont't fit in the blazer tank (larger diameter).

If you have a good tank, use the install ring that allows you to use the OEM late model pump module...

Thanks. Unfortunately i dont have a tank at all but i will keep the ring in mind in case something comes up.

I used an LMC gas tank (21 gallon I think) and a Speedway motors fuel pump with a sump assembly. To fit the tank in between the rails you have to cut out one of the cross rails for the steel bed just behind the rear wheels, not pleased but not a terribly big deal. When the tank is put is in place the top of the tank is really close to the bed floor. I had to recess the roof of the tank (ultimately wasn't enough but we adapt) and allow for clearance on top for the 90' -6AN fittings. It worked out really well, the process wasn't pretty but effective. PM if you would like a pic, I don't have any account for hosting pics anymore.
