'06 HD Straight Axle Conversion Build Pics...

Hey All....

Once again my long time annoying buddy, Joe, has got me wasting my time on more of his BS builds...this time once again on his weak a$$ truck (always give'n crap about it)

Anyway, should'a bought a Diesel, but whatever, 6.0 it is !!

When he got this truck a while ago, we lifted it using a PC kit.

After that came an airlocker, which took its toll on the halfshafts..three to be exact !! Then snapped a carrier mount...then lost a wheel on the highway !!!

So after a long time of slowly collecting parts...here we are !!!

ORD supplies the kit, Super Duty witll spring it, and a 3/4 ton Dodge AMM axle will carry it....

Here goes nuthin.....

Lets get this sucker on the lift, shall we ?

We loosened everything up, and lowered the truck's stock suspension onto a pallet:

Good luck with it. That's a sweet truck too. Even if it does have a 6.0 in it.

Here's the Dodge Axle....Another good thing about running this axel, is the Chevy ABS sensors are same, and will plug right into the Dodge axle !! This kit is intended for an older Ford axle, which already has 36" pad centers...

Gonna have to plasma off all the stock coil and fourlink mounts....

If you notice, the crossmember was removed (even though the kit states that it doesn't need to be removed...DO NOT REMOVE exact words) ... I'm gonna fab up a much cleaner one later !!

I know it is ... it's my good friend Joe the kinda friend you grew up getting in trouble with...(ya, that kinda friend )

I would take that 6.0 for my '63 C-10 any day !!!

But, he still should of got a DuraMax !!

Although a future Cummins swap is up in the air.....

Wait a minute, that would mean more of "Joe" in my shop !!! :sumo:

Axle is finally prepped and sanded:

-
http://i1039.photobucket.com/albums/...8276543516.jpg

Now, the only tuff part about running this Dodge axle was getting the drivers side leaf spring pad to sit correctly.
-
-
Pass side...no brainer:
-
http://i1039.photobucket.com/albums/...8283407773.jpg
-
The springs have to be set at a 36" pad center....So this DS places the pad part way up onto the center casting....With a little patience, I made it happen !!
-
-
First we trimmed off the pad so it sits level:
-
http://i1039.photobucket.com/albums/...8283457457.jpg
-
-
Then we had to slightly grind away part of the casted in bumpstop contact pad:
-
-
http://i1039.photobucket.com/albums/...8283442650.jpg
-
-
http://i1039.photobucket.com/albums/...8283469296.jpg
-
-
Once we had the pad over far enough (it didn't take much really, only about 3/16" of material had to be removed) it was time to drill for the u bolt...
-
-

-
http://i1039.photobucket.com/albums/...8283890411.jpg

-
http://i1039.photobucket.com/albums/...8284579278.jpg
-
http://i1039.photobucket.com/albums/...8284557153.jpg
-
-
Simple notch gave clearance for u-bolt:
-
-
http://i1039.photobucket.com/albums/...8285323071.jpg
-
-
Before we drilled, we pulled the diff cover and checked to be sure it was in fact a big chunk of casting....
-
-
The kit supplied us with 3" axle ubolts, and one larger one (the one used). This axle requires 3 1/2" which are coming today....

Very nice work! I'm sure that was nerve wracking drilling into the housing!

Good info sir. What length springs and rate are you using? And what shocks did you decide to use? By the perches it looks like you plan on running duels straight up. If I ever decided to purchase a new body style GM I would jump right into a SAS.

Looking badass so far. The drilling part looks scary but it looks like it turned out great. Keep up the good work and good luck with the rest of it :D

We are using stock '99 up SuperDuty springs. I'm not a big fan of running 20 shocks per corner for some kind of 'look'. I recommended to him to just run two lightly valved shocks....

So far I and the owner are liking it.

Acording to the kit...hanger and Super duty spring provide an equivilant to a 6" lift...but it looks more closer to 8"

Next will be some paint...correct u-bolts, then move on to steering !!!!

So the plan is to see what you get for lift in the front then match the rear?

Now that is just darn right awesome! Just the way the General should have done it the first time. The only place IFS belongs is on ATV’s and little trucks like Toyota Tacomas.

Good work Chief!

Looking forward to the final product!

These NBS Chevy/GMC look so tough with a SAS, instead of that snowplow IFS lift crap. Nice work man.

Re: '06 HD Straight Axle Conversion Build Pics...

Hey all !!

I know it's been a while, but we have slowly made some progress. Being that it my buddy and not a 'regular' customer, I work on it when I have spare time to keep the costs down.

Anyway, we test fitted the axle, and quickly found that the pinion angle wasn't exactly where I wanted it, so I fabbed up a shim and welded it solid to the existing pad.

Now we are perfect !!

He picked up a matching diff cover....which only need slight sanding to clear the DS inner ubolt .....

ChiefRocka 10-28-2011 09:09 AM

Re: '06 HD Straight Axle Conversion Build Pics...

Even though the ABS sensors are the same, the Dodge ones are way longer.

So rather than extend the wires, I going to swap the Dodge pigtails to the Chevy so we can utilize the longer wire without extending.

Pics soon !!
