Wing vents whistling!! Help!

My 86 silverado has a very annoying issue of wind noise coming from the wing vents on both doors. I have already added a dime, and a nickel on the passanger side. I know it is not really helping, but it makes it a bit quieter. All the rubber seems to be in pretty good shape, still soft and flexible. Not sure what to try now. Is there maybe a common fix that works that I dont know about? Any ideas? SO annoying..

thanks
robert

Re: Wing vents whistling!! Help!

I have known a couple of people with new ruber who gave up and sealed the wing windows shut with RTV. It isn't a good solution if you like having wing windows like I do, but it shows you how difficult it can be to get them to seal.

The previous owner of mine added thin pieces of stick on weatherstripping between the glass and the seal. It sealed surprisingly well considering the poor condition of the rubber.

I recall reading something a couple of years ago that said the very late suburbans (like '90 or '91) had a different, larger rubber seal that worked better. The poster said they had purchased a set from their dealer and noticed an improvement. I have never seen or heard anything like it since then, so I have no idea if it is correct information.

I changed my handles and the whistling went away. They used to always whistle when I was growing up riding with the old man, then we changed the handles when i got the truck and they quit whistling.

Are the handles hard to change? Mine does not whistle but does have some wind noise.

I went and bought some double side 3m tape, the type used to hang mirrors. I cleaned the rubber seal then added tape and trimed it to fit, it has stopped most of the whistling altogether.

After many attempts at getting mine to seal, my driver's side wing window is now permanently closed w/RTV and is dead silent. I guess that makes me a quitter.

I bought a set from chevyduty (forgot the new name) and they were pretty easy to install. This was about two years ago but it seems like it only took about 1/2 an hour to do both sides. I took the old ones and put them in my Blazer as one side was missing the handle and the other side was pretty sloppy.
This will help some with the wind noise, but I think ultimately it comes down to the weathseal/felt/gasket parts?

Wow great thread!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Mine have been bad since i got my truck. One day on a long hot trip (header heat coming up threw floor) I opened the one and the glass fell out!! my rubber is okay but the window is out of the frame no wonder it makes the nosie and my locks are very sloppy. I am going for a kit from LMC. new window channel felts, Vent window rubber seals., wing window handles, outside and inside felt scrappers. I think it came out to 17?$ or somthing. The only thing i am wondering is how to install the vent wintow rubber? do i need to drill out the rivet? Also should RTV seal the window back in the frame or should i take it to aglass shop?

Thanks i have never posted on his but it has been bugging me since day one

I got mine from LMC, locking handles. Easy swap, only issue is the rollpin tends to work itself out over time, just have to watch it and retap it in.

Only suggestion might be go non-locking unless theft is THAT bad around you. The locks on mine are already a bit vauge, gotta turn them further to click, they just don't feel as solid as one without the locks. Just my .02

Haven't done it but I read on here a while back that it is a real pain to do the wing windows. If I remember right it was said that it would be worth the money to buy new assemblies even at ~$150 each side?

Chevy Duty changed their name to "CLASSIC PARTS" and do not ask why! I do not know what their thinking was. I will be getting me some new non locking ones and see if I can install them. I really do not think the locking ones would stop someone from breaking into your truck if they wanted to.

My '87 Suburban never whistled until after it was broken into. The previous owner had glued them shut. The thief broke the seal and the window.

Same here gasser, until they broke the glass out never had a problem with it. That's when they stole my brand new cd stereo my wife had installed for me.

The locking window latch didn't stop the guy who broke into mine, either. The latch was still in the locked position when I pick it up off the ground after he broke the glass.

The $0.05 (or is it a penny)repair helped mine.I would look into the better seals from a late(r) model. Then tell us if it helped.

If I remember correctly is was at the request of GM? Or maybe more precisely Chevrolet. Something about the value of the brand name.
Seems that after years of it being OK to use the "Chevy" moniker in their title, all of a sudden it was a bad thing.
The funny thing is that when you see a Chevy truck commercial and they talk about how many are still registered on the road its companies like (Classic Parts) that help them maintain that statistic. Sort of shooting themselves in the foot?

As far as the 1-piece glass kits, to each their own. I like wing windows and always have. Used to be into Buicks a few years ago and when I got my '69 GS 400 I put '68 doors on it because in '69 they did away with the wing windows.

I will NEVER delete my wing windows. When its September, and there are more days where its too comfortable to run A/C but its hot enough to make ya wanna roll the winders down, nothing beats the wing windows.

Then again, I love windows down or wings open in my hooptie ol' truck but THAT'S JUST ME.

Same here. I like wing windows, and drive with the windows down whenever it is cool enough.

Does anyone know if there really is a new and improved style of wing window seal? I only heard it that one time, so it may be incorrect.
