Looking for a diagram of front Differential
I am trying to deside if I can try and tackle replacing bearings in the front dif on my 93 Silverado. The local shop wants at least $2000 to replace bearings only. More if there is additional damage.
I have humm i posted about that I am trying to pin point. Will be rotating tires and checking wheel bearings this weekend. If that doesnt fix it its most likely the dif that shows some wet spots. Any help is appreciated. I never opened a front differential before and special tools needed to replace/ |

Can anyone help? |
Re: Looking for a diagram of front Differential
I assume that it's independent front suspension? $2,000 seems outrageous to me...

Have you checked to see if the bearing noise might be a wheel bearing? if the carrier bearings or pinion bearings need replaced this is one of the tools needed. |
Re: Looking for a diagram of front Differential
I see in another post that you are talking about wheel bearings noise, and you may be on to something. If the 4 wheel is not in use and is working right it wont be turning. That would leave the wheel bearings.

Re: Looking for a diagram of front Differential
Maybe just the inside CV joint is on its way out? Dry/damaged CV joints will click when you turn them.. just something else to look at that may be a bit cheaper to fix.

Thats a good point I had not thought of that. How far into the diff case does the CV Axel go? This clicking noise is not far inside the drivers side case. When the truck is not in 4 wheel drive the diff does not move right? Only the axels move so they slip or not engaged in the differential? |
Re: Looking for a diagram of front Differential
If you are just looking for a schematic diagram to decide if you want to tackle this project, you might try one of the parts house websites.;) O'reillys or AutoZone have vehicle repair guides that walk you through step by step.
The guides are not available on "every" repair but you might check. I have used them a couple times to help me re-assemble when I took a few days off from a project, came back, and couldn't remember the assembly order.:dohh: |

No, the differential carrier itself is not moving until you pull on the lever and the front axle actuator receives a signal from the switch on the tcase to move the fork and engage the front differential (item 14 in the diagram). This is basically, a more modern and complicated and less reliable way of doing the same job as the manual locking hubs used to do on the trusty old trucks. However, the CV's move all the time. Here is the diagram you were looking for. GREAT THANKS :metal: I am goingto try and replace the CV first. Do you think I need to replace both? |
