Chevy Sport Truck questions

I believe that Chevy sold a Sport Truck between 1989 and 1994.

What was the RPO code?

What did the RPO include besides body-coloured grill? External changes? Interior features? Other?

Was it available in all the offered paint colours?

Thanks for the help. :)

Re: Chevy Sport Truck questions

I don't remember one for these models, but that don't mean much. There were sooooo many option packages being sold.

Re: Chevy Sport Truck questions

Perhaps the trucks with body-coloured grills, bumpers, etc. are not a separate model. Maybe it was an appearance option.

Anyone know? :help:

Re: Chevy Sport Truck questions

I just did a search and alot of stuff on google say the sport truck option is waht most of us call the SS454 (1990-1993) option.
http://www.454ss.com/

There is also a Sport Truck option for the S10s

Re: Chevy Sport Truck questions

Thanks, Bill, but I've seen them (with the body-coloured grill) without the SS454 option.

For example.......

However, your observation helps in the description of what I'm after. Which RPO were the trucks that looked similar in appearance to the SS454, but were not actually SS454 trucks?

Re: Chevy Sport Truck questions

I have seen those year K5 Blazers with a Sport option so you would think they had a truck version too?
I think the K5 in white with the grey color cladding/grill/trim looks particuly nice!

Re: Chevy Sport Truck questions

My guess on this one would be that it is just something a guy built?

Re: Chevy Sport Truck questions

Look what I found. Apparently, there was a GMC version as well. The "Sierra GT".

Quote:

GMC Sierra GT/Chevrolet Sport - Powered by the 5.7-liter V8 (1996 and newer trucks get the new Vortec engines) mated to a 5-speed manual tranmission or 4-speed automatic. Options include 15x8-inch chrome 5-spoke 454SS-type wheels with 275/60R15 BFGoodrich Comp T/As, Bilstien shocks, sway bars, and a 454SS-type air dam with fog lights. The body of these trucks receive a mono-chromatic paint treatment. The GMC Sierra gets "GT" decals. These trucks are availble in both the fleetside and Sportside body styles.

Hmmm, I have seen the Sierra GT's before.
Wonder why I didn't remeber that... must have been from coming of age in the 80's....

Re: Chevy Sport Truck questions

I'm betting someone on this forum has either a 1989 - 1994 Chevy Sport or a GMC Sierra GT.

Model RPO? __________

Items included in the option? ______________

Re: Chevy Sport Truck questions

I tried to use "sport" as a keyword on Autotrader for trucks and got ~80 results. This is a 4x4 Sport. After seeing this one I do remeber the big billboard "SPORT" graphics on some trucks. I believe the S10's had a BAJA package around the same time.
I didn't see any 2wd Sport's. There might have been some but the name "Sport" wasn't in the immediate description?

Tried it again for BLazers and again got a bunch (they are all "sport utility") but this is the one I like.

Heres a Sierra GT

My brother oned one, it was an 89 or 90, red, shortbed I think, wide bed, had the "sport' decal on the sides of the bed, behind the wheel, up high, had the body colored grille, composite headlites, and chrome steel wheels. Don't remember much else about it...............

Re: Chevy Sport Truck questions

According to the writeup in Wikopedia.

1988-98
Introduced in April 1987 as 1988 models (known as the GMT400 platform), there were eight different versions of the C/K line for 1988: Fleetside Single Cab, Fleetside Extended Cab, Fleetside Crew Cab, and Stepside Single Cab, each in either 2WD (C) or 4WD (K) drivelines. Three trim levels were available: Cheyenne, Scottsdale, and Silverado. Engines were a 160 hp (119 kW) 4.3 L V6, a 175 hp (130 kW) 5.0 L V8, a 210 hp (157 kW) 5.7 L V8 and a 6.2 L diesel V8. A 230 hp (172 kW) 7.4 L V8 was available in the 3/4-ton and one-ton trucks. In 1989, a fleetside Sport package was available with matching body color bumpers and grille, chrome wheels, and fog lights. A Z71 off-road package was also available with skid plates and Bilstein shocks. The Work Truck (W/T) was also introduced in 1990, which featured a single cab long bed with Cheyenne trim and new grille with black bumpers. In 1991, the 4L80-E automatic transmission was available for the 3/4-ton and one-ton trucks. In 1992, the 4-speed manual transmission was dropped and the stepside trucks were available with extended cabs. The 6.5 L diesel V8 was also made available with a turbocharger. In 1993, the Sport package was made available for the stepside models, featuring body color bumpers, mirrors, and grille with cast aluminum wheels. The 700R4 transmission was replaced with the 4L60-E automatic in 1993 also. In 1994, the 6.2 L diesel V8 was dropped and the trucks received grille updates. In 1995, the trucks received an updated interior and audio system. Four wheel ABS brakes were made standard in 1995 as well as driver's side airbag on 1/2 ton models. The Vortec V8s were introduced in 1996, with power boosts across the board for the gasoline engines, thanks to high-flow cylinder heads, new camshaft, roller valve lifters and a higher compression ratio. Speed sensitive steering was introduced on the trucks in 1997 along with a passenger side airbag. 1998 saw a revision to the steering wheel and airbag system and also the addition of the PASSLOCK II antitheft system.

This platform was one of two where the traditional small-block Chevrolet V8 was last used (the G-series van was the last platform using the small block until the end of the 2002 model year).

The GMT800 platform was introduced in 1999 although the GMT400 platform was produced until the 2000 model year in response to fleet sales. Although no longer produced in the U.S., GMT400s are currently produced in Brasil powered with a Chevrolet inline six.

454 SS

In 1990, Chevrolet introduced a high performance variant of the GMT400 under the Super Sport brand called the 454 SS. It was available in only regular cab half-ton specification in Onyx Black. The 454 SS was powered by a 454 cu in (7.4 L) V8 producing 230 hp (172 kW) and 385 ft·lbf (522 N·m). A 3-speed automatic transmission and 3.73 rear axle ratio added to the truck's performance. The suspension was also upgraded with 32 mm (1.3 in) Bilstein gas-filled shock absorbers, a 32 mm (1.3 in) front stabilizer bar, and 12.7:1 fast-ratio steering gear assembly.

Unique exterior features included a front air dam with fog lights, special rims, decals displaying "454 SS" on the trunk sides, red trim emblems, and black painted grille, bumpers, and mirrors. The interior was also unique with a special plush Garnet Red cloth with black trim, high-back reclining sport bucket seats, and center console.

MSRP of the 1990 model was US$18,295 with a US$550 destination charge. 16,953 total units were sold over the 4 years the 454 SS was in production with 1990, the first year of production, selling 13,748 units alone. The 454 SS was discontinued after the 1993 model year.

I don't know the option code, but this description is correct. Picture all the features unique to an SS 454, take away the 454 and you have a Sport Truck.

It had body color grill, and bumper. The side molding was black with a red stripe rather than chrome. It believe it had SS or 350 SS depending on the year. It had the same chrome wheels as the SS 454 as well. I almost bought a 90 back in 93. I wish I had, and put it up.

Re: Chevy Sport Truck questions

According to what I've found so far, the SS350 was not a Chevy model or option. Due to limited availability of the SS454, some dealers simple decided to capitalize on the popularity of the SS454 and renamed the Chevy Sport to the SS350. The Sport came with a 5-speed manual transmission, but I am led to believe that the 4-speed auto was available.

Thanks for all the information offered so far.

Anything more would be appreciated.

Re: Chevy Sport Truck questions

As you can see on my Z-71 Tahoe daily driver, I like the body-coloured grill, bumper and mirror look.

http://i22.tinypic.com/foehw2.jpg

Thus my interest in a 1989-1994 Chevy Sport 1/2 ton. ;)

just a bowtie and the word "sport" in the same script and colors as the SS454 trucks.

as to the above mentioned 5 speed, with an auto option, i'd put money on it being the other way around. cant say ive ever seen a 5 speed sport, but the autos are the ones i see.

on another note... the 454 trucks got the TH400(1990) or 4L80E(1991+), and a 14 bolt semi floating 5 lug rear end (specific to this truck) where the Sports got the 8.5" 10 bolt, and a 700/4L60/4L60E

I never realized the 454SS trucks came with an OD tranny.
Did they survive?
Did they make much of a difference on the mileage?

Re: Chevy Sport Truck questions

Here you go - a "Sport" in KY. Although they are listing it as an "SS".

On a side note what it says in the Technical notes on AT is in 1990 it was 10/11 city/hwy and on an OD truck it is 10/12 city hwy. I hope those OD tranny's took the torque as they didn't seem to give you much better mileage?

As a side note to a side note, those dashboards on the early 90's trucks were very ugly.

Thanks for that link. To confuse things a bit, it looks like the earlier Chevy Sport truck did not get the body-colour grill, etc. Must have been after 1990 that happened.

I'm surprised that there isn't more published information about each year's models and RPO's like exists about Corvettes on http://www.corvetteactioncenter.com/specs/ Have I just not found the right area here yet?
