salvage title

I came across a 53 3100 last year and started working on it, the guy i got it from never came up with a title so the project came to a screeching holt finally got some direction from DMV, so it went to a salvage yard for 30 days then it sat for 3 more months until they (salvage yard) were issued a salvage title then transferred it to me for $250. I don't care about it being a salvage title as long as i have one. Any one else gone threw this?

I would check with your insurance agent to see if the salvage title will cause any problems with getting it insured.

I did and their only requirement was that i have a body shop inspect it for any frame damage or safety issues such as lights or glass. I also explained to them that the reason for the salvage title is because of a lost title. now i have to make sure that the Dakota I find for a donor has a good frame. It wasn't thast hard getting this done just time consuming

Keep in mind for the future there are title services out there that can help you get a real title issued for it for about the same money. There are a few states that did not issue titles for vehicles over a certain age. Thats where these title services come into play! If you need more info, let me know! I would be happy to help.

There is a lot of discussion on those title services on other boards and the results aren't always pleasant. rjs53's way of doing it may be a bit different for some guys but if he has someone he trusts to hold the truck in the yard for that amount of time and run the paper work the title will be 100% legal and binding and won't ever be questioned. I've bought a couple of cars out of a friend's impound lot and never had trouble with the title except here we have to run them through inspection and that takes an appointment that may be a bit hard to get at times. I would rather have the salvage title that I knew I would never have an issue with later rather than worry about a knock on the door from a law enforcement agent telling me that my title company title was bogus and my truck was going to be impounded.

I was worried about leaving the truck at the salvage yard so I took only what I had to. The cab with doors and the frame, I had some past experience with the salvage yard, but I still wasn't sure if it would be there when i went to pick it up. I also called the DMV to make sure they new about the salvage yards plan.

Keep all your receipts for what you put into it & make sure they are in your name. When you get it done you have to take it to the DMV for inspection. At least that is the way it is in Mo.

Re: salvage title

the only thing i need here is the body shop inspection, if I couldn't get a salvage title it would have been a builder title and i would then need all recipes and it would then been titled as a 2011 or what ever year i finished it and it would have to pass all smog and safety inspections of the year it was registered, so it worked out for me this way

Re: salvage title

Sounds like you have it squared away but I'd tell the dmv that I "bought" the body out of the wrecking yard. Or let them assume that you bought it out of the wrecking yard. I got it out of the wrecking yard, it came from the wrecking yard or something similar is probably better than "I took the body to the wrecking yard so I could get a salvage title on it".
